Dark Brandon’s Policies Pt V

The Biden administration announced this week that it will pause student loan forgiveness processing under a key program.

The suspension is part of a broader transition, whereby the Department of Education will be taking over the administering of several student loan forgiveness programs from contracted loan servicers. During the pause, borrowers can submit student loan forgiveness applications, but will not receive any discharges until the transition period is complete.

_________

This will be a good thing because MOHELA is the devil, but the timing sucks.

DETROIT (AP) — The Environmental Protection Agency on Thursday awarded $20 billion in federal green bank grants to eight community development banks and nonprofit organizations to use on projects combating climate change in disadvantaged communities and helping Americans save money and reduce their carbon footprints.

The money could fund tens of thousands of eligible projects ranging from residential heat pumps and other energy-efficient home improvements to larger-scale projects such as electric vehicle charging stations and community cooling centers.

If there is oversight to prevent red states/communities from spending the money on tax refunds or other projects outside the scope of the plan, they will likely slow-walk any green projects. I’m hoping the blue areas will organize and get done all they can, but they’ve been known, in situations like this, to spend years debating which projects to start first. Here’s their chance to show they can get the job done.

I’m a bit of a gun collector and I’ve never understood why universal background checks are a problem. If I go to a gun show and buy from a FFL vendor I have to fill one out. If I go into a store and purchase it I have to fill one out. Why shouldn’t private sales be the same?

The Biden administration on Friday said it's canceling $7.4 billion in student debt for 277,000 borrowers, with the recipients scheduled to receive emails today to alert them to their loan discharges.

The latest effort extends the debt relief provider under President Joe Biden after the Supreme Court last year blocked his administration's plan for broad-based student loan forgiveness. With the latest batch of loan cancellations, the White House said it has forgiven about $153 billion in debt for 4.3 million student borrowers.

Biden, who had made student loan relief a major campaign pledge, is tackling an issue that affects about 43 million Americans with a combined $1.7 trillion in student debt. It's a burden that some borrowers and their advocates say has harmed their ability to save for a home or achieve financial milestones, an issue that was echoed by Education Secretary Miguel Cardona in a conference call with reporters.

"I talked to a teacher in New York this week who took out a loan for $30,000," Cardona said Friday, "and after over a decade of paying and being a teacher the debt was $60,000, and she was saying that the interest was so high that the payments that she was making wasn't even touching her principal."

He added, "We are fixing a broken system. We're relentless and taking steps to transform a broken system into one that works people across the country."

____________

If we can forgive trillion$$ for businesses then we can forgive student debt when they meet criteria already in the law and that has, in the past, been denied by the likes of MOHELA because it enriches them.

New airline accountability rules just announced by the White House state that if your luggage is lost, or if your flight is canceled or delayed, you the passenger are entitled to a FULL refund within 20 days.

And the refund is in cash, not credits, and is automatic; you will NOT be required to call anyone and stay on hold for hours.

"It's the airline's responsibility to get you your money back," said Secretary of Transportation Pete Buttigieg. Thank you President Biden!

They should also make it illegal for airlines, or any industry, to over book. Showing up for a flight that you booked far in advance, only to be told there are no more seats is wrong. Those people should be given 100% refunds and a free flight to get to their destinations or the practice should be illegal. It is even happening in the cruise industry now. Imagine booking a cruise a year out, scheduling flights and hotels in the port city only to arrive at the terminal and being told they don't have a room available. It's ridiculous.

I agree. Of course, the airlines claim that they would have partially empty planes because of late cancellations and would have to raise fares. Sobeit...

Lord, back when I was a regular flier (before 9/11), I was bumped on the regular, including a truly insufferable 6 hour exile in the St. Louis airport. The only redeeming feature of the experience was that the main airport restaurant had really good french onion soup.
