This thread is hilarious, why can't I quit you guys? :)

I ran into a Gamecock coach a while back and asked him about JC, and he said they were very comfortable with their chances.

Why? (warning: conjecture to follow)

1. Hate to sound like a broken record, but when we were at the bottom of the well, we kept getting great recruits because they didn't care about probation and national championships, they wanted to play for the home school. Why we belittle that instate pull when it applies to other places always surprises me.

2. South Carolina's defense is way ahead of its offense right now, which we should have seen first hand when they fought us all over the field last year in Tuscaloosa. Don't think for a second that JC isn't being told he could become part of something special.

3. JC's high school is a relatively new one. But it has already established a pipeline to Columbia. Stephon Gilmore, who will be an All-American one day, is one of Clowney's best friends.

4. This is not a rich family. A one-hour drive to Columbia vs. a seven-hour one to Tuscaloosa could be a factor, a big one.

Hope we get him, and I like our chances vs. all but one school. But this will be a really tough pull out of South Carolina. The fans and coaches here believe JC is a prospect they can't afford to lose.

I can tell you one thing, if Coach Carroll had anything to say about, Clowney would probably be in Tuscaloosa next season. He basically said after his visit with JC that is was "the most incredible place he's ever seen."

I actually heard that the USCe coaches don't think JC is a lock at all and Bama is one of the teams they are worried about. Say what you will but it is not outside the realm of possibility that we lead for JC right now. But it's a long way to NSD.:BigA:

I agree with that sentiment. The TI interview with Bobby Carroll, head coach at South Pointe HS leaves no doubt about how impressed he is with Bama. If Clowney feels even close to the same way about Bama then they are in very good shape.

I guess we play in Columbia this year, so I'm sure JC will be there. It will mean a lot for Bama to dominate that game. Which could be a tough task since we'll be coming off a tough game with FLorida and a tough stretch of SEC opponents. If USC somehow beats us, that could be the nail in the coffin for JC.

Also, We do have 3 committed DE's right now, not sure how many USC have, but I hope we can leave a spot open for him come NSD.

if you're the #1 prospect in the nation, South Carolina wouldn't be a realistic choice to play college ball regardless of what position you play or where you're from. if your goal is to work hard enough to have great success in college football, and also get the exposure needed to guarantee being a top level NFL draft pick, you go to one of the power programs. he's likely just keeping South Carolina on his short list to keep the home folks off his back. realistically, he will end up at a place like Bama, North Carolina (although they're a stretch being really a basketball school), Florida, Texas, Oklahoma, etc. I hope we get him though. It would be awesome for him, and for us.

andre smith went to bama when we weren't the best. why can't clowney go to south carolina. you guys acting like the in state team isn't a draw are being foolish. i hope we get him, and think we are in decent shape, but don't belittle him for looking at or going to usc.

Andre Smith was very close to choosing LSU. But besides, Alabama was coming off a season that saw us go 10-2, and we were ranked as high as #3 in the country in November.

I'm not going to belittle South Carolina, but comparing the situations is rediculous. Alabama has always had a strong draw with recruits (especially our in-state pool). We're a program that's relavent nationally. While Alabama had some lean years from 1997-2006, we still had enough success on the football field to draw recruits. Not to mention the appeal of our tradition. South Carolina, on the other hand, has been woefully inconsistent throughout its history, and has never been able to keep the best of its in-state talent at home. I'm not going to say Clowney is leaving the state, but I do like Alabama's chances after the recent visit. He may take another unofficial, and still has his official before NSD. It will be a recruiting battle that will be waged for several more months.

We kept getting top notch in-state recruits because we’re Alabama. I don’t want to sound like a homer, but it’s the same reason Southern Cal will continue to get top California recruits even while they’re on probation. There are a handful of schools that will ALWAYS get top notch in-state recruits, no matter the circumstances, and we are one of those schools.

You've got to know your place in the world. Alabama is part of the haves. I know that sounds arrogant, but it must be acknowledged. I'll readily admit that we're part of the have not's in basketball. I understand that, and I know we're doing all we can in that department, but there's no shame in admitting the truth. South Carolina is part of the have not's in football. I know they're doing all they can to catch up, but the truth is the truth.

In 2010 South Carolina got 2 of the top 5 recruits in-state
In 2009 South Carolina got 3 of the top 5 recruits in-state
In 2008 South Carolina got 1 of the top 5 recruits in-state

In 2010 Alabama got 4 of the top 5 recruits in-state. (The one we didn’t get was an Auburn legacy.)
In 2009 Alabama got 5 of the top 5 recruits in-state.
In 2008 Alabama got 5 of the top 5 recruits in-state.

The stats don’t lie. The in-state pull isn’t the same for kids from the Palmetto State, at least for kids considering South Carolina.

You mean the same one that gave up 269 all purpose yards to Mark Ingram? Sure, McElroy struggled, but remember, that was during his prolonged slump. He would have had that same game against South Carolina State. He was in a funk for the middle part of the season. I can't fear South Carolina's defense when they gave up 269 yards to one player.

3. JC's high school is a relatively new one. But it has already established a pipeline to Columbia. Stephon Gilmore, who will be an All-American one day, is one of Clowney's best friends.

Not much to argue with here. I will say though that there are plenty of friends who go opposite directions in college football. Heck there’s plenty of brothers who go different directions when playing college football. Clowney and Gilmore will be friends no matter where they end up playing.

Just remember, A.J Green was one they couldn’t afford to lose either.

Please enlighten us Mr. Smash.

I would agree that those who think instate pressue has no significant effect are off-base. In fact, having no inside info, I would give So Car the edge. I would add that those who think Bama can't get a top player out of SC are also off-base. So again, please help us silly clowns understand.

Just remember, A.J Green was one they couldn’t afford to lose either.

You do realize that A.J. Green committed to UGA his sophomore year and has been a lifelong Georgia fan. You're probably thinking of Carlos Dunlap where we all had our mini melt-down and cried that the sky was falling.

The instate "state school" probably starts off with a big advantage in at least 75% of cases. It's closer, parents can attend, parents are not that far away otherwise, the after-football support network is already there, etc. This is the case for just about any such school, especially in the South.

There's no denying that Alabama probably has even more of an advantage because of its tradtional spot as a football power, but it would enjoy a strategic advantage anyway. Look at Ole Miss. Why would anybody really WANT to go there based on their record?

I wasn't aware of when he committed to UGA, just that he ultimately did. You can't afford to lose prospects of his caliber and expect to win Championships. He's a once in a lifetime WR. Sure there are other WR that might be as talented or have been as talented in the past few years or in the near future, but not from South Carolina.

Cadillac Williams was a lifelong Alabama fan but ultimately went to Auburn. I'm not saying Clowney wont end up at USC. What I am saying, is that his interest is real. South Carolina isn't battling a team like Syracuse, Oklahoma State or Ole Miss for his signature, they're battling Alabama, and we're a real threat to land him. The pull of the home-state is strong, but it's not everything.

Star, as someone who grew up in the Shoals but now lives about 10 miles from JC's high school, I can't argue with many of your points.

It's a long way to February. JC may indeed sign with us (his coach either fell in love or is auditioning for a job). But I believe that for now, the moons are aligning that will make that a little more difficult than an objective appraisal of us vs. South Carolina might indicate.

Each kid is different. Each kid's decision is unique to his circumstances. For every A.J. Green and Jon Fulton who found a reason to leave, there's a Da'Quan Bowers, Stephon Gilmore and Marcus Lattimore who found sufficient cause to stay.

From this vantage point, and eagerly hunting a good recipe for crow, I'd bet a dollar of your money that Clowney stays home.

I am glad you mentioned Da'Quan Bowers for an example. He stayed home alright, but Clemson is also home in SC which is were he signed. That brings up a point I want to make about Clowney. His HS coach Bobby Carroll said in an interview that he isn't even sure which SC team that Clowney favors in state, Clemson or USC. So this feeling that USC is in good position to sign Clowney just does not jive with the public record.

Although getting this guy would be great, tall and fast defensive ends aren't exactly an area Alabama is lacking in. Saban said something along the lines of "you don't see many 6'6" athletes." Well we sure do have a lot of them.

Three of those guys are 6'6" or above, and they're all praised for their athleticism and speed. I'd love to add Clowney to that mix but I can hardly complain with our current roster. I think the difference between a lot these players and Clowney is a year under the best developing staff in college football.
