Defensive Adjustments Question

In DeBoer's press conference today, when asked about defensive adjustments, he rambled for a few moments and then mentioned the worst thing you can do is panic. I don't disagree. However, when you're still getting steamrolled by Vandy at the end of the third quarter, I think something more than staying calm needs to be in your repertoire.

I didn't hear an awareness of how big this loss was. This was a historical loss, of season, maybe early tenure-defining proportions. Very little of what he said about the team being committed and preparing well lined up with the game performance. I would have liked to have heard some thoughts on how he's going to address the disconnect between what he saw/sees and the actual results on the field.

Getting Shula press conference vibes. :(
There are definitely times when panic is in order--I concur

Meanwhile, heard in every future Alabama opponent's offensive Coordinator meeting today: "How quickly can we implement option looks for the Alabama game?"
I can promise you AU will heavily study what Vandy did and try to mimic it even if that prep causes them to lose other games. They know this year is a lost cause for them and beating us would make their season.

Of course they will. I would too. For Alabama to have gotten no better at defending it as the game went on screams that they aren't capable of defending it. If I'm an OC, I'm giddy right now. South Caroline might not have time to implement anything, but every other team will, especially teams with nothing else to play for. And if you aren't going to be in the 12-team playoff (see Auburn and most of the rest of our remaining opponents), then you have nothing else but beating Bama to play for.

It was just a lot Bama had not seen on film. But they failed to adjust. Or it seemed that way.

What else is there to say? None of the kids were alive the last time we lost to Vandy, it isn't going mean anything. They may remember ULM.

There is also a wide range of things that can happen between 'panic' and doing nothing, a very wide range. Some of those things include, informed and well thought out significant changes in approach. He better be thinking about things in that realm.

Vandy? Vandy ran the same offense they have run in every game this year. No wrinkles or tricks. Triple option.

ETA, the book on stopping the triple option was written decades ago. It isn't fancy, and it doesn't require great athletes, but is does require discipline.

A big part of me really hopes students on campus are giving the players a ton of grief about this loss, just to really drive it home.

Folks funding NIL should be doing the same.
Agreed - they are not being paid to show up. They are being paid to prepare for and play winning football.

I just hope he has picked up that book and studies it so that he will know what to do the next time he sees it...

Did everyone forget how bad the D looked against South Florida? They missed a few easy wide open touchdowns and it was still a dog fight til the last few minutes. With the caliber players we have, young or not, our defense should not be this bad, maybe not top 5 in the country, but not this mess right now

Pruitt is a PE teacher right now. His show cause is until 2029, but I believe that would only really influence on field activities and interacting with recruits.

I don't see why he couldn't at least be brought in as a consultant.
I dont know what good that would do .. Womack runs completely difference defense.

That's part of the problem isn't it?

That aspect aside, Pruitt had the #1 defense at multiple schools and a multitude of SEC experience. If there isn't any advice he can offer Womack to help his defense than there's something seriously wrong with it. If I were Womack though I'd be asking how to be more like Pruitt's defense because it was immensely better.

Edit: The what I feel is obvious fact that this defense should still be running Saban's scheme, even with an inferior scheme he's less familiar with, Pruitt can still do things like scout opposing teams for weaknesses to exploit, help the team adjust to particular offenses, so on so forth. You don't have the kind of success Pruitt had without having knowledge that transcends merely the defensive scheme, and I'd argue his knowledge and ability to outsmart the opposing offensive coordinator is probably even more valuable to someone that might be in over their head like Womack.
