Now that the Vandy tape is out there now, and some of the issues on defense are now public, i think we're going to see other teams exploit the bama defense like vandy did and have better players to do it with. The issues on defense need to be corrected in a hurry or may not be pretty.

Our coaches know this and it will force them to make adjustments or be fired at year end. 😁

I was worried Georgia would try to run it down our throats after seeing what USF did to us. Our only saving grace is that we got on 'em so quick I guess they felt like they had to throw to match us score for score. You know they're kicking themselves now.

They'll get more out of watching the second half of the UGA game.

It's nearly impossible to implement an option attack for a single game if you normally run a more traditional style of modern offense.

If any of our future opponents attempt that it would like result in a greater disaster for them than us.

This game is a chance to restore some confidence in our defense for the fans....if we dont show a marked improvement over Saturday then this is going to be a long season. We have the athletes it would seem, we just lack discipline and organization...cant believe i'm typing that. Vandy showed some major issues and that will be noted by every opponent here on in unless we show we have fixed those issues.

The Vandy game hopefully forced the players and the staff to do some real soul searching , roll their sleeves up and get the issues fixed. This is a honeymoon is officially over type of week.

As bad as it sucks to lose, everything this team wants to accomplish is still there for the taking. There isn't a surefire dominant team this year and when we are playing with intentionality, focus, and together I don't see anyone that we can't beat. We lose this weekend and the fat lady has sang. No excuses, everyone within the program knows what's at stake now.

This guy was mentioned by Drew DeArmond on Talking Ball this morning. It is hard to watch because it exposes the Bama scheme as repetitive and attackable.

Summarizing, Bama plays mostly "Cover 1 Robber", and when you play mostly one thing, it becomes easy to attack. Bama sometimes switched up to stunting some guys to the outside to control the edges more, which the Vandy OC recognized and ran it straight down the middle.

You don't have to watch it all, 10 minutes will do.

I was disappointed in Wommack making excuses about how Vandy used plays not seen before.
I'm sorry if I misunderstand, but isn't the job of a defensive coordinator - never mind one making 7 figures a year - to know how to freaking adjust to things he wasn't expecting?

I think he thought he would put the defense in a base set they could react quicker rather than teaching them the assignments in option football. He probably told CKD that it wasnt ideal meaning they will give up some points but it should get the job done. CKD signed off on it thinking he would outscore them.

It would have worked except for the pick six and the punt return substitution penalty. That's 14 points. Then they could not adjust their defense likely because they had not taught the assignments during game preparation.

A failure of contingency planning of the first order.

We are young on defense, right? We also are running a new scheme, right?

I wonder how many of our defensive players have EVER played a wishbone/veer offense. I'd say only a handful.

It's crazy how hard teams that don't see this have trouble with it.

BTW, I think if we could forget the team we played last Saturday is called "Vandy" many of us could start moving on because we associate "Vandy" with incompetence in football. But that's not your daddy's "Vandy" football team.

They'll win more SEC games this year.

No. Our secondary is a mix of freshmen and experienced guys but our defense as a whole is mostly veteran guys.

Maybe young isn't the right word, but inexperienced is.

From the 2023 season we lost the following starters :

2 Edge Rushers
our most productive DL
2 corners
2 Safeties.

We also lost 5 second string DBs, 2 second line ILBs.

So really our secondary is very, very inexperienced other than Moore. Even an 'older guy' like Smith didn't really have that many game reps behind him before this season. Then Sabb and the USC CB had game reps, but not SEC level reps...

In Coach KW's defense, it was a simple screenshot of one play and "on paper" I can assure you he has all the gaps accounted for. Of course there is post snap gap exchanges (at times) and what you see is not always what you get, but my point was I did not think we took away what they do best Saturday. I've always personally believed that if we could stop them from doing what they wanted to do, and forced them to try to beat us doing something that they necessarily weren't great doing, we gave ourselves a chance to get off the field and win. Saturday, Vanderbilt was never uncomfortable offensively. We needed to shove more bodies in the box but not necessarily always send all of them. This would have screwed with their blocking assignments and forced their hand a little more as opposed to giving them more conservative looks and keeping the whole playbook open.
completely agree with your 'on paper' assessment of gap coverage. I'm sure we have a hat in a gap on paper, so the question I have is are we putting the right hats, with the right skillsets into the right gaps? To me, it doesn't seem like we are.

Something to make you all think differently about last week's game. Compare the Ga. Southern game from 2011 with last week's and you will see that the greatest defense of Coach Saban's tenure got lit up. If that game would have had a pick 6 and two #2's on the field at the same time which caused a 14 point swing, that game would have probably had the same outcome. We won 45-21 that night. This screenshot does not appear to be the entire game because the time of possession doesn't match up but it gives you an idea of the game.
