Devastating Tornado Damage in Tuscaloosa

I spoke with my mother in Arab earlier this evening. They have had no power since noon today. She's having trouble calling out or getting calls in on her cell phone, but I was able to reach her after trying many times. The Ruth Community north of Arab has been devastated by a tornado - 5 people killed, many people injured and one man missing.

Lots of rescue workers coming in from other parts of the area to assist - passing by her house, thank goodness.

Prayers going out to everyone everywhere!

Thanks, I finally got my parents and they are ok. She had also heard about the devastation in Ruth. I'm just so sorry for everyone there. It's very hard to be this far away! Prayers are with you all!

Just spoke to a friend who was at "ground zero". He indicated his mom's house and my grandmom's house on Eastwood were not too bad relative to others in area. Only 1 block away (15th & McFarland) is devestated. We will probably head to T-Town this weekend to clean up, if we can get in.

Just got off the phone with my cousin. They are stacking body bags at the V A hospital. The news isn't reporting the deaths yet. I fear that the report TideMan09 put up may be true. My cousin does animal rescue over in Coker off Sam Sutton and she is getting calls. Does anyone know if Eutaw was reporting damage? I can't get ahold of my cousin from there. Thanks.
My Step Brother that's in the National Guard..His unit was bused to TTown last night..He called my sister today & said basically the same thing..He told her parts of TTown looked worse than the war zone he was at in Irag..This literally makes me sick to my stomach..

From what I've gathered from pics and the aerial shots, this is basically the path of the tornado through Tuscaloosa. Obviously, damage was not confined to just this area.

I have been looking for a map of the path of the tornado. Thanks. Looks like my old apt (Fountainbleau) on 27th street when I was in school was in the path. Just sick about this... just sick...

How can they not report this? It seems like by now some news service would discover it and report it. Is this from the area close to campus or another area in town? We have a family friend who is still unaccounted for at his point. Are there any press conferences scheduled by the mayor or any city officials?

I work in Anniston (Golden Springs area) and our area got some bad stuff as well. Ohatchee (as you mentioned earlier) and the Glencoe/Gadsden area (Silver Lakes especially), as well as the Webster's Chapel/Read's Mill/Wellington area. A lady I work with lives in Wellington and was at her parents home, but can't get to her house because there are huge parts of houses in the road. Truly devastating in so many places.

I have no idea Dallas..They may not be reporting deaths until the bodies are identified or has contacted the next of kin before they pass it on to the media..It's a massive destruction that's larger than the Oak Grove Tornado..

Classes and Normal Operations Suspended; Update on Final Exams and Commencement

UPDATED Thursday, April 27, 1:00 p.m. - Normal operations are suspended as recovery efforts continue. The University will not conduct final exams next week as scheduled.

Students will have the option of accepting their existing grades as of April 27, 2011, or they can take a final exam at a later date. For those students who request to take a final exam, faculty will have the option of scheduling the final exam on site when normal operations resume or via distance education means.

This schedule change includes all enrolled students except those in the School of Law and School of Medicine. Their academic calendars vary and they should be in touch with their faculty for confirmation of their exam schedule.

Faculty should communicate with their students via e-learning or their normal means as facilities are restored. Students should know that not all faculty will have communication capabilities immediately.

Commencement exercises scheduled for May 7, 2011, have been rescheduled for Aug. 6, 2011, when May and August graduates will be recognized.

These steps are being taken to allow students impacted by the storms to return to their homes while recovery efforts continue in the Tuscaloosa area.

These changes are in keeping with academic guidelines that are part of the emergency operations and recovery plans for the campus.

And here is a list of damaged and destroyed buildings...

A student that works in the ticket office called his Dad(friend of mine) and said William Vlahos is in the hospital. Said he was blown over 100 feet in the air.

If true, I hope that William makes a complete recovery, but in his own time. Any word on his condition? Its not about having him to play this season, its about the fact that he is a human being and is effected by this whole thing. Every life lost or impacted by this makes it tragic. Athlete or not.

This article is about the athletic dept. The fact that there is no mention of everyone being accounted for is very disturbing. I just have to hope they haven't had enough time yet, and that everyone will be accounted for. I just feel like saying nothing right now is saying something if you know what I mean. I wish William a speedy recovery for his own sake not us as fans.
