TUSCALOOSA, AL –
Alabama baseball won in dominant fashion on Tuesday afternoon, coming away with a 12-2 victory over South Alabama. The victory moves the Crimson Tide to 13-0 to start the season.

Alabama's offense put together another big day, totaling 12 runs on 14 hits and three walks. All nine starters contributed at least one run with eight of the nine starters recording at least one hit. Junior Tyler Gentry led the way, finishing 3-for-5 with two home runs and added a team-high and career-best six RBI to go with three runs. Also homering were redshirt sophomore Sam Praytor and sophomore Drew Williamson. Praytor finished 2-for-5 with the homer, three RBI and one run, while Williamson went 2-for-4 with a home run, an RBI, one run and a walk.

The Crimson Tide pitchers combined to hold USA to only two runs with neither being earned. The arms allowed a season-low tying four hits and issued just two walks while striking out nine Jaguar hitters. Senior Casey Cobb (2-0) picked up the win thanks to 3.0 scoreless frames that included only one hit and four strikeouts.

From Head Coach Brad Bohannon

"First thing I would like to do is give a shout out to our grounds crew. We have had an unbelievable amount of rain this past month and John, Drew, Ryan and Dwight have just been working nonstop. Being able to get a game in today with the volume of rain we've had recently was big, and I really appreciate those guys and the amount of work they put in. Obviously, with the game – it was just our day. We had a lot of hard contact with multiple home runs, and the pitching was lights out. This was a really good day for us. Hopefully we can carry that on into the weekend."

How It Happened

  • T1 | A two-out error with the bases loaded allowed a pair to score for the Jaguars. (2-0, South Alabama)
  • B1 | Senior Brett Auerbach led the inning off with a double and came around to score one out later when Gentry homered deep to left to even the score up. Then, with two down, Williamson belted a solo shot to right-center to give Alabama the lead. (3-2, Alabama)
  • B4 | T.J. Reeves was hit by a pitch to put the sophomore aboard for Jim Jarvis. The freshman delivered, sending an RBI-double down the line in left to add to the Tide's advantage. (4-2, Alabama)
  • B5 | Auerbach began with a walk and was followed by freshman Owen Diodati, who singled to put two on and force a USA mound visit. Gentry dug in after the visit, sending a ball over the wall in left for his second home run of the day. (7-2, Alabama)
  • B8 | Jarvis started the frame with a single. Freshman Peyton Wilson then walked and a single from senior Kolby Robinson loaded them up. Following an Alabama out and a Jaguar pitching change, Diodati sent a sac fly to left to bring in one. Gentry followed with a single to left to score a pair before Praytor cleared the bases with a three-run home run down the left field line. (12-2, Alabama)
Postgame Notes

  • Alabama is 13-0 to begin the 2020 campaign which is the best start under head coach Brad Bohannon, surpassing the 2018 squad's 9-0 start to the year. The 13-0 mark is the second-best start to a season in program history. The Alabama all-time mark for wins to begin a season is 15 which was accomplished by the 1997 squad.
  • The 13-game winning streak is the longest under Bohannon, moving past the 12-game streak the 2019 team posted from Feb. 24 through March 12. The 13-game stretch is tied for the fifth-longest winning streak overall in program history. Three previous Tide teams have won 13 straight, most recently the 1984 squad.
  • Alabama's pitchers allowed only four hits, tying for the lowest opponent hit total this season. The Tide had held the opposition to only four hits twice already this season, most recently against Northeastern on Feb. 15.
  • Alabama totaled double-digit runs in a game for the seventh time.
  • The Tide bats also accumulated double-digit hits for the ninth time in 2020 with eight of those performances coming at home.
  • All nine starters recorded at least one run. Eight of the nine starters also contributed at least one hit on the day.
  • The Crimson Tide hitters have now hit at least one home run in 11 of 13 games with multiple homers in five of those contests.
  • Tyler Gentry recorded two home runs against USA. The two-homer performance is the third of his career and second this season. He also notched a pair of roundtrippers on Feb. 23 at UNLV. Gentry first accomplished the task last season on April 9 at Samford.
  • Gentry's two-homer performance is the Crimson Tide's fourth multi-home run game of the season. Owen Diodati recorded a pair of homers in the season opener on Feb. 14, then Sam Praytor tallied two homers in game one of the doubleheader at UNLV on Feb. 21, and finally Gentry's outing in the series finale with the Rebels on Feb. 23.
  • The six-RBI performance from Gentry is the first since Matt Malkin produced six RBI against UAB on April 10, 2018.
  • With his 2-for-5 showing, Sam Praytor has now recorded a hit in his last seven games. Across the streak, Praytor is batting .435 (10-23) with a double, three home runs, seven RBI, eight runs scored, four walks and five hit-by-pitch.
