Eli stated publicly that he wanted to keep broadcasting for 10 more years so I'm not sure where you saw that he asked for 1 more year as a swan song. His performance had slipped quite a bit and was below the requirements for the job, so it was time for him to go and apparently, he refused to acknowledge that.
“I was called into a meeting a couple of weeks ago in (Alabama athletic director) Greg Byrne’s office,” Gold said in an interview with Tide 100.9 radio. “The indication I was given was that the university was ready to make a change. I did offer a compromise. I said, ‘Look, let me do one more year. Let me do one more full season, home and away (games), and then I would quietly walk off into the sunset, and you wouldn’t hear from me again.’

What does this even mean? Why would you say something like that? Sounds like a veiled threat to me...

It sounds like a man whose ego has preventing him from coming to grips with his age and physical health. How does one come to feel entitled to a position in an sport where massive change is the norm?
