That was the first Bama loss i ever experienced. I really didn't start watching football until the 79 Sugar Bowl when we beat Penn State. I was 10. Of course the following season we were undefeated and won the NC again. That first loss was devastating to a 12-year old.

I remember exactly where I was. We had just brought a load of hay over from my grandfather's farm to ours. My dad stopped backing the trailer into the barn and we sat and listened to the final few minutes. And then came the fumble...

My primary structures professor at Alabama told us that he was taking the professional engineers exam that day. The test proctor wrote the score of this game on the chalkboard mid exam. He wasn't too pleased that something distracting like that was done during such an important 8 hour exam. For context, that's like the engineering version of the CPA or bar exam.

I just don't know if the equivalent of Coach Bryant coming to your locker room, sitting down in a chair, and congratulating you on your team beating his team exists today.

"Don't let anyone tell you this was an upset. You kicked our tails out there today."
Indeed, and the troopers having to help in up on the chair. Man, his health was so bad.

I was a store manager at a Athlete's Foot store here in Pensacola. I was listening to the second half and was totally stunned!! We didn't lose a lot back then, and not to State. We ended up with all kinds of problems with them and USM for a couple of years. I think the next year we beat State despite 7 TO's maybe..

I was 13 the day of the game and remember it well. At that age two years is a long time.

At that age I was too young to know who Shorty was but I remember my parents talking about him. Ran for governor a lot and drank a lot. Sounds like quite a character.

I was at the game sitting in the end zone where all the drama happened at the end. It was amazing we almost got that fumble at the end. I was living in Jackson at the time. Not a fun week after the game and then we lost to ND.
