FBI considering moving training academy from Quantico to Huntsville, Alabama: Sources - ABC News

The FBI is considering moving one of its training academies from Quantico, Virginia, to Huntsville, Alabama, according to sources familiar with the decision, as part of a broader effort to shift federal law enforcement resources out of the Capital region.

This training academy, the FBI National Academy, is a 10-week training program for law enforcement leaders from around the country, including FBI agents.

The FBI said in a statement that "any relocation options are being evaluated for budgetary reasons and to save money, while taking advantage of the best facilities available."

It would save money on cost of living allowances, although given how much Huntsville has grown, I do not know how much. I suspect living in Huntsville is more expensive now than in 1981.
Still probably way cheaper than in Quantico.

They already have a sizeable presence here. A lot of their new agents are trained here. IDK how much additional construction would be needed. The establishment here of the initial far precede Trump's term in the Whitehouse...

The British government under Blair faced a couple of problems:
London is horribly expensive city to live in (so the government had to pay extraordinary salaries.
The periphery (Cornwall, Wales, Scotland) had high unemployment (due to de-industrialization).

Blair's solution: move ministries out of London to high unemployment areas. You solve the unemployment problem and you can pay them less for the same work. The Ministry of Transport, for example, moved to Cardiff, Wales. Portions of MoD moved to Glasgow, Scotland. I thought this was pretty clever.

I hope the federal government does something similar.

Actually no. For FY 2025, Quantico is cheaper for travel costs. Lodging is $110 per night compared to $141 and meals and incidental expenses are $68 per day compared to $74.

A guy I used to work out with a few years ago decided to join the FBI and went through training (and was eventually stationed) in Huntsville.

I was thinking more the permanent party folks, not the TDY folks.

For most Government schools, I suspect the TDY costs are higher. But I think the locality pay for Huntsville is higher than Quantico. I THINK Quantico is in the "Rest of US" pay rate, not the Washington DC rate, which a little higher than Huntsville. I suspect that the TDY student cost difference would outweigh that.

You could well be right.
Not sure what would push the FBI to move activities to Huntsville then.
Weather? Probably better for outdoors stuff in January, but miserably hot and sticky in August, plus summer thundrstorms in Alabama are probably more common than in NoVa.
I would much rather live and work in Huntsville than NoVa, but I am a bit odd that way.

The FBI has had a long-term plan to reduce its footprint in the DC area. All the studies I've seen show Huntsville as the lower cost alternative to every move which has seen people relocated here. In the case of the Space Force, there's never been a cost study by any agency showing Co. Spgs. as the cheaper alternative. There were two showing HSV to be cheaper. I just have a hard time believing COL is lower anywhere in NoVA, having had relatives there and visiting...

We didn't get to 36T by worrying about which location is cheaper. Its all politics!
