Final A-Day/Spring Practice Analysis, Observations, Reflections, Predictions, etc.

Re: Offense @ A-Day?

I'm pretty sure I saw a couple of blitzes. There weren't many, and in fact they were all pretty much basic, but they were there. There's even one captured on that clip Sam posted I believe.

Was recalling from memory... and I want to believe a coach mentioned it after the game. However, in both cases, I could be mistaken... wouldn't be the first nor the last time. :)

I could just as easily be mistaken, but the only reason I brought it up was because that video clip that silentsam posted sure seems to have captured a blitzing DB about half-way through it. Maybe my idea of a blitz is different from our coach's idea of a blitz.

Here's an observation for ya, as far as atmosphere and numbers.

I was in my dads office today, and he got a call. It was Mr. Jordan (Lee Roy though I'd never call him that to his face lol). Anyhow they were just BSing and my dad told him me and the family went to Spring Game and was telling him what I had said about it. He interrupted and said, hey you don't have to tell me I was there to. It was the craziest thing ever .. and I quote " It was bigger than any National Championship game or any Super Bowl I was in.. it blew me away".

Now that says something about a guy who's seen so much.

I believe you're right. Glad to see I cleared something up without even knowing it. Couldn't tell who the player was due to the video being filmed from the upper deck, but he was lined up and blitzed from being 'over' a slot receiver. You may be correct. Historically, our coaches idea of a blitz is a very violent and confusing experience for an opposing offense. I'm pumped up for a QB 'earhole' shot! How bout you? It'll be great seeing the other teams QB get pounded rather than our own for a change. W00t!

Talked to a guy who played golf with him in the tournament on Friday... said that LRJ indicated nothing but pleasure with the job that Saban is doing. I'm going to guess that if things progress, all of the former players are going to be on board just as much as LRJ... which is something that has been very much lacking in the past. :)

>In Darby's defense, that wasn't his fault. Shula and/or Rader didn't do him or >us (obviously) any favors.

I disgaree Shula/Rader continuously worked with trying to get Darby to run like he did the year before - We all saw it, he did run with the same determination as he did the year before. I blame Darby 100% he changed his style of running the ball - Darby admitted it - he went back and watched films from the year before when he ran the ball much better - same coaches.

I heard many people say that Johns did a better job running the FB than Darby last year - Johns had the same coaches as Darby but Johns showed more effort

Darby may do well in the pros, I sure hope so.

You are 100% correct that the rule change moving the ball back five yards on the kick-off to the 30 was put in place to have more excitement on kick offs and limit the number of touchbacks. With that said, we were consistently giving up returns to the 30 and beyond. Moving a ball back five yards and having Jamie still get the ball inside the 5 yard line a good team would still stop the return at worst by the 25 yard line. We were giving up more than that way to consistently.
What kind of hang time did the kickoffs have? If he's still getting it inside the 5 at the expense of hang time (kicking at a lower trajectory), then he's actually doing to the return team a disservice. I don't know that this is the case, but unless the kick goes out the back of the endzone, it takes more than distance to be a good kick.

Not only are the returners braver since they aren't going to be popped in the mouth on each run
I seem to recall Arenas getting drilled fielding several punts last year that he probably should have fair caught. So, at least in his case, I don't buy the "no tackling make him braver" argument.
