First Commit for '06: Mikhail Torrance

Torrance commits early to Tide

Great news Bama needs another point guard. RTR!

Torrance commits early to Tide

The University of Alabama men’s basketball team has received its first commitment for the November, 2005, early signing period.

Mikhail Torrance, a 6-foot-3 guard who is currently a junior at Mary Montgomery High School in Mobile, said Sunday that he would sign with the Crimson Tide. Torrance can sign in the November 2005 early signing period and would be a member of the Crimson Tide team in 2006-2007.

Torrance, a point guard, is currently averaging 18 points, eight assists and four rebounds per game for the Vikings.

“He has great ball-handling ability," his prep coach, John Davis, said on Sunday. “His strengths are court vision, passing and work ethic."

Can't have too many ball handlers.

Assuming that there is no early exodus to the NBA, the 06 class will need to fill in behind seniors Winston, Felix, Davis and Brock. Here's hoping we add some bigs to the group.

When you posted that on the Recruiting board yesterday, my first thought was "what the heck are we recruiting 186 pound guards for? Has CMS gone over the edge?" LOL

Great commit!

Steele will go to the NBA early...

barring injury. He will likely be able to graduate (something he does value) in three years, and then he will move on. He's that good. We are very fortunate to have him.

MGM's Torrance commits to Tide
The 6-foot-3, 180-pound combo guard, a long-time Alabama fan, gave his verbal on the spot after visiting with Gottfried and assistant coach Philip Pearson on a night when the Crimson Tide's scheduled game against Georgia was postponed by a night.

"This is something I always wanted to do," Torrance said. "It was a life-long dream."

Torrance is averaging 18 points, eight assists and four rebounds for the Vikings. "A lot of teams are keying on him now and we're trying to get him to spread the wealth," MGM coach John Davis said.

I've heard he's underrated b/c he's never played AAU ball. Heard Tim Watts say that he'd have to be special for Bama to take him this early.
