Yeah, there were two guys ahead of Peyton and Brandon Stewart, another true freshman. I'm pretty sure Jerry Colquitt was one of them. I don't know why I keep thinking the other one was Todd Helton, the baseball player. I can't remember if that was his year to be there, or Andy Kelly, or neither one.
Anyway, one guy goes down in the opener against UCLA, I think, and the other one didn't last much longer. Peyton and Stewart end up splitting the job the rest of the year, then Stewart transferred to Texas A&M, where he started but didn't exactly star.
Stewart played the second quarter of the UA-UT game that year and we weren't having much luck stopping him. We go to half, and Fulmer never reinserted him. He played Peyton the entire second half. I think if they'd continue to alternate QBs in that game, UT might have won.
