Friday Games We (somewhat) Care About: Egg Bowl, etc.

He just claimed UTx should be in because they play in the SEC, beat the #3 team in the country, and only lost to OSU by 7. He conveniently left out the loss to a horrible Florida team and getting blown out by UGA.

They don’t really want to compare resumes with Bama.

This is the point the anti-playoff folks always made. Go back to the BCS or the 4-team and nobody with a functioning brain thinks a 3-loss team belongs. Expand it and the argument shifts from who belongs to “my 3 losses are really not 3 losses.”

Despite the fact that the committee historically has not punished teams for playing the extra championship game, I would be very afraid of that. And if they were going to do it to anyone, you know they would stick it to BAMA.

This committee dropping us 6 spots from 4 to 10 for losing a 2 point game to the #11 team in the country told me all I need to know. If we lose in the SECCG we're done.

Just my two cents that I’m hoping the ward off the evil spirits with, but A&M going increases this feeling that we’re about to as well. I think the league wants to see Kirby and Lane go at it in Atlanta, and us losing could have the unintended effect of keeping Lane at OM because he may well not be able to pass up another shot at Kirby in Atlanta. That would of course upset LSU’s possible apple cart and do no telling what to the Sumrall sweepstakes which seems to be veering towards Gainesville more so than Auburn anyway. Auburn winning would automatically make them googley-eyed for Durkin and easier to transfer expectations away from other candidates. I hope I’m wrong.

You better believe it. The idiot CFP chair drooled all over A&M for having to come back from a 4 TD deficit to beat South Carolina at home while he almost simultaneously hated on Alabama for coming back from 8 to win against the same team ON THE ROAD - because, you know, rushing yards and all. They wouldn’t hesitate to screw us over for losing the SECCG after giving weak sister SMU an absolute pass on the same situation.

That rushing yards comment is - bar none - the dumbest argument I’ve ever heard regarding rankings in my 48 seasons of listening to mouth breathers defend bad poll rankings.

It’s dumber than “I think Boise should be #1,” dumber than Bobby Petrino hopping on the motorcycle, dumber than hiring Houston Nutt as a head coach.

I don’t trust the committee at all. But I still think we beat Auburn and we’re in. If they punish us for losing an extra game we had to EARN to even play in order to reward a team sitting home watching on TV, there would be a massive revolt by the SEC. That happens and the SEC should immediately eliminate the SEC title game.

There's no way he didn't want a shot to win the conference.

Then he is a moron. Before aTm went down he was at worst a #5 seed hosting a home playoff game. Now he is hoping Auburn beats us to get that guarantee back. If he loses to Bama again then he is traveling to either South Bend, College Station, Oxford, Norman, or Eugene. Or he is possibly out entirely depending on the wackiness that could happen in the Big XII and ACC.

Winning the conference comes at a high risk, and when you are forced to win a minimum of 3 games to win a national championship then you want EVERY advantage if you have to play 4 games. Winning the conference last year did him zero favors.

We deserve it though. Had no business losing that game.

Do we? Going on an 8 game winning streak and beating four ranked SEC teams in a row (an SEC record) is trumped by one game at the beginning of the season? Then why play the rest of the games on our schedule after the loss? If that loss was insurmountable then we should have benched Ty and the rest of the players not returning next year to get the returning players ready for next season.

Can we stop with pretending the committee has a long track record that guides us? This is Year TWO of a 12-team playoff.

Now…..the claims made sound exactly the same as the insanity of the 4-team, l agree.

Well Alabama fans constantly complain about any metric until we get in. I constantly heard the SOS argument but it’s constantly ignored when Alabama needs to get in over a team with a better SOS.

Honestly I think the committee is starting with the top 5 and then grouping 6-15 against each other. I feel that they were hoping the Miami and BYU situations would have sorted themselves out but haven’t. So until Tuesday we won’t truly know what this committee values and anything right now is in an effort to position against the ACC and Big XII potential chaos. I believe if we beat Auburn then we jump ND to position a swap between us and UGA, and to show our fate should we lose the SECCG. Which I still firmly believe will not kick us out because of the potential consequences it carries amongst the two big conferences off the field.

The problem is that we have expanded conferences so much that it is impossible to not have some sort of playoff without eliminating about 40-50 teams. Tonight really showed that a weak team even in the toughest conference can gain a playoff spot just based of lucky scheduling. Alabama, Georgia, and Oklahoma are probably the only deserving teams in the SEC to be considered for a national championship but they all played a hellacious schedule while Ole Miss played 2 good teams and aTm lost to the only team they played with a pulse.

I’m more for a 4 super conference system where each conference has 16 teams. You do 10 conference schedules with divisions. Division winners play for the conference championship and the conference champs for each conference play in a 4 team playoff in which the rankings of the seedlings of the 4 are decided by a BCS like algorithm. All of the non playoff teams with 7 wins will go to bowls if everyone still wants them. Not perfect, and not without controversy but everyone knows the rules.
