Galen Smith Rebounding

I noticed last year and really noticing this year. But watch Galen Smith closely today against Iowa State. When one of our players shoots or when an opponent shoots, Galen Smith will completely turn his back from the basket, chase down whomever his box out assignment is and remove himself completely from the potential rebound. Granted, I understand he is trying to be fundamental. But I have literally seen him be the only player under the basket, a ball is shot and he will turn his back to the basket, run to the top of the key to box out the post man who just initiated the high pick and roll or something of the like. Im not really attempting to pick on him, but it's an oddity that I would think the coaches would work on with him.
