I was playing NCAA Football 2014 on XBox 360 the other night, and Herbstreit's commentary included a gem along the lines of "I can count on one hand the last time I saw a defensive performance this dominant"

If I remember correctly, when that lame holding call took back what should have been TD #2, Gary's first comment was "there's your make up call" for the missed facemask.

Yeah, because normally the call is for a penalty that never happened. At least throw a flag on something that if someone put the tape could say "it was nit picky but technically it was a penalty by definition of the rule". Not just an out of thin air flag

Be careful what we wish for, though. ESPN hasnt been known as a nurturing site for great commentators. The early days , sure , but not of late.
