It Was Only the Beginning in 1961
The article brings tears to my eyes.
I thought he was going to say the 1961 national championship ring, when he was a backup quarterback who never had a chance to play first string, but one who must have caught the eye of the Bear as one you could depend upon, no matter what the odds.
Now that a whole new generation has experienced how a great coach can come in and turn a situation -- and the world around it -- on its collective ear, maybe you can understand what it was like back there in 1961. Crew cuts all around. Blue blazers and loafers with white socks were worn for the team picture. Fresh faces, just about all of them recruited by the new coach, Bear Bryant.
Mal Moore is a last vestige of that halcyon time, when the Bear came in and in effect served notice, "This is only the beginning, not the end." Well, Saban actually said it, but that's just what it was like when Mal Moore, the always smiling kid from Dozier, was a backup quarterback for the Bear in 1961.
