Good Mal Moore article

It Was Only the Beginning in 1961

The article brings tears to my eyes.

I thought he was going to say the 1961 national championship ring, when he was a backup quarterback who never had a chance to play first string, but one who must have caught the eye of the Bear as one you could depend upon, no matter what the odds.

Now that a whole new generation has experienced how a great coach can come in and turn a situation -- and the world around it -- on its collective ear, maybe you can understand what it was like back there in 1961. Crew cuts all around. Blue blazers and loafers with white socks were worn for the team picture. Fresh faces, just about all of them recruited by the new coach, Bear Bryant.

Mal Moore is a last vestige of that halcyon time, when the Bear came in and in effect served notice, "This is only the beginning, not the end." Well, Saban actually said it, but that's just what it was like when Mal Moore, the always smiling kid from Dozier, was a backup quarterback for the Bear in 1961.

You know what stood out to me other than the touching article?

Look at the photo. Put a houndstooth hat on the man and he resembles Bryant in his later years. Almost scary.

sip, I hadn't noticed the picture of Coach Moore until you drew my attention to it. Great observation. Simply amazing. The picture looks very similar to Coach Bryant when he turned his head to look left or right. Putting a hat on that picture of Coach Moore could almost cause some confusion.
