Government Shutdown

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

I believe that healthcare for all Americans is a noble cause to invest in with tax dollars. IMO, more of our tax dollars should go towards healthcare and less should go towards corporate/billionaire bailouts, the American Gestapo (ICE), and the ever-ballooning military budget.

Tax breaks/subsidies that help the majority of Americans should be praised, and subsidies that only benefit the top 1% should be scrutinized.
All well and good, but when you have a sizeable number of people who make probably $50,000 a year, and who also think that billionaires should pay no taxes, that's where we are at.

They have been convinced that what you call a noble cause is demonic and socialist(without really knowing what that word actually means....Joe Rogan knows better).

And most are part of a religious cult that suffers the least of these, because (as they believe) theirs is the Kingdumb Of Heaven.

I literally do not know a single person that thinks billionaires shouldn't pay income taxes. I'm sure they're out there somewhere but I've never run into them. I am 1000% in favor of closing the carried interest loophole and stopping someone from living off debt their entire life in order to not show AGI on their tax return. The issue I have is this idea of a wealth tax where we confiscate 5% of your net worth every year until you die, or making the marginal tax rate north of 50%. We need people, especially high achievers, to have incentives to earn. Without that they'll just go to the beach and count their money all day.

That's because it's a BS talking point with no basis in fact. It gets pushed by Dems who conveniently "forget" who actually funds their preferred candidates. Dems have held power many, many times and will do so again. Driving up taxes on the people who donate to your campaign is exactly how you LOSE power. Rich people support both sides of the aisle so they won't have to worry regardless of who wins. When you think about it, very little changes for us, either. Anyone who thinks this is just a coincidence should go get a CAT scan to see if there is anything between their ears.

There is no reason we should cap SS assessments for billionaires. This whole "they're JOB CREATORS" mantra is just a scare tactic to protect the über wealthy. It would fix the SS shortfall. And the über rich would not be that affected.

I agree that the SS cap should be removed but that's not really going to hurt the "rich" since they have very little earned income (a tax term). It will only hurt the upper middle class. No problem with that. However, it isn't going to "fix" the shortfall. It will help extend out the impending bankruptcy (BS term everyone likes to use) for a few more years.

yep, raise taxes on the über wealthy by 3% and you know what will happen to them?

they’ll still be the über wealthy

If you want to shut up a MAGA supporter when they are bashing the ACA, ask them where is the MAGA/Republican plan they have been promising ever since the ACA was enacted?

They don't have one. It has been a political tool of theirs to bash the ACA because they knew it would probably not be repealed. Easier to call it "Obamacare" so they can continue to bash a president who left office nearly 10 years ago.

Was it a perfect bill? Hell, no. And I even agree with CA about it. It's way more expensive than private insurance. But what other option does one have if he/she is a farmer, independent contractor or otherwise working for an entity that doesn't provide health insurance?

The 500 lb gorilla in the room has always been universal coverage, Medicare-for-all. I am not going to go into the arguments. I acknowledge that it would be an expensive proposition. Perhaps make it available only to those who cannot get private insurance in any other way.
Rub some dirt on it, you will be alright...

Finally, we have some honesty.

Neither side really wants to raise taxes on the rich because it's the rich who fund their campaigns and pad their pockets. Could you imagine the amount of money that would be pulled from the campaigns by rich donors if either one of them did something to truly raise taxes on them? LOL!

As I've said for years, the dirty little secret about politics is that Democrats LOVE MONEY just as much as their Republican brothers do, they just lie about it. Republicans love abortions, too. Democrats own guns as well. Republicans employ illegals they claim they want deported.
It's all a big game but unfortunately, it's the only game we've got.

Bernie Sanders is part of the same 1% whom he claims are ruining everything.

The hell of it is, it isn't really a secret at all. Everyone knows this except for the exceptionally stupid, but people still play the game. They still insist in the hero mythology of "good versus evil" for reasons I can't even begin to fathom. (Actually, I can. Psychology has identified the cause of this idiocy, but I'm just too tired to get into it now. Pretend I didn't say anything.)

Oh yeah, it's nothing more than a, "I believe (fill in the blank) until it applies/happens to me" syndrome. I know republican business owners in my area who believe something should be done about illegals yet when it comes to their jobs, will use an illegal in a New York second to make more profit on a job. I've got a friend from HS whose family was dyed in the wool Republicans/conservatives who were FULLY against abortions.....until their daughter got pregnant her senior year. (Funny how that works, isn't it?)

My wife's side of the family has several rich family members who are all Democrats/liberals. They are the standard "the rich are bad", "need to be taxed more"......until it comes to their personal income and businesses. Everyone of them cheats on their taxes with unreported income, and constantly complains about the taxes they do pay, whether its property taxes, federal taxes or state taxes. They love their money so much that's all they talk about. Again, funny how that works, isn't it?

I found this short video of the interview.
“I mean, shutdowns are terrible and of course there will be, you know, families that are going to suffer. We take that responsibility very seriously, but it is one of the few leverage times we have.” House Minority Whip Katherine Clark
I am painfully aware of the danger of taking a quote out of context, so I'm sure conservative media has snipped this in a way to make it look egregious. That said, Clark appears to be saying: (1) People will suffer. (2) We are responsible. (3) We did it for leverage.
Ethically, this seem to me to be like negotiating with someone over the price of a car. I am willing to pay $10. The seller says it is worth $15k. I counter by saying, "I'm going to punch my mother in the face until you agree to $10k, and when I start punching my mother in the face, I demand of the seller, "How can you be so cruel?"

ALl I have seen is the little snippet, so I guess I am wondering if the broader context of the quote could make it sound not so bad.
