Just got back in from helping a buddy repair his irrigation system.

Going to relax in the AC the rest of the day.

He's a big cycling fan like me so we sat in his den and watched the ending of today's Tour of France sprint finish.

Another mutual friend who is a builder is finishing a home next door and was meeting with his clients. Afterwards all 3 of us had a chance to chat a bit. I learned his father has passed away after a stroke in May. The conversation turned to local father and son businesses here - the auto electric business and the tire store - and there are others.

The chat only lasted about 10 minutes but guess it's a variation of folks getting together across the country to celebrate the nations birthday together.

I hope it's a great day for all!

Happy Birthday America!

There is a book on my bookshelves by Caroline Robbins called The Eighteenth Century Commonwealthmen. In it, Robbins explains about early eighteenth century Whig political theorists who explained that tyranny came from the King in Parliament buying the MPs off with titles and monopolies. These Commonwealthmen wrote pamphlets that made their way across the Atlantic and when Westminster ended its period of benign neglect and started trying to make money from the Colonies, the fuze was lit. The Americans connected what the Commmonwealthmen wrote to what they saw in British imperial policy and drew the conclusion that tyranny was around the corner.

Edmund Burke said this in March 1775 about legal education in the American colonies:
"This study renders men acute, inquisitive, dexterous, prompt in attack, ready in defence, full of resources. In other countries, the people, more simple, and of a less mercurial cast, judge of an ill principle in government only by an actual grievance; here (in the American colonies) they anticipate the evil, and judge of the pressure of the grievance by the badness of the principle. They augur misgovernment at a distance; and snuff the approach of tyranny in every tainted breeze."

Spark meets powder...

I posted this seven years ago, but it bears repeating.

Examination of Joseph Galloway (a Pennsylvanian loyal to the Crown), testified before Parliament in 1779. When the colonies were enlisting troops, the authorities wrote down their place of origin.

Question.—That part of the rebel army that enlisted in the service of the Congress, were they chiefly composed of the natives of America, or were the greatest part of them English, Scotch and Irish?
Answer.—The names and places of their nativity being taken down, I can answer the question with precision. There were scarcely one-fourth natives of America—about one-half Irish—the other fourth were English and Scotch."
John Brown Dillon, Notes on Historical Evidence in Reference to Adverse Theories of the Origin and Nature of the Government of the United States of America, (New York: S. W. Green, 1871), 56.

Now, this is not all rebel soldiers in all armies throughout the American Revolution. It is one data point from Philadelphia early in the Revolution, but it is interesting.

The Way I Heard It with Mike Rowe

Originally posted July 4, 2016.

I wrote this last night around 7pm. I’m posting it this morning around 7am. I point this out because optics seem to matter more than ever in this day and age, and I’d hate to confirm the mistaken belief held by some that I drink beer in the morning.

Even on a holiday.

You must REALLY hate the idea of an Imperial Presidency.
I'm not a huge fan.
At it most basic, the legislature legislate, the executive executes.
The president is not a god* or an emperor. Most of them are not even particularly bright or possessed of above average integrity. I've said before, I have a great deal more respect for my garbage collector than I do for my president. My garbage collector actually does something that benefits me, and frequently in very unpleasant circumstances, yet we do not give him a house, or a 747.

* Romans used to "deify" great emperors. In the US, we build temples to them. Like the blasphemous monstrosity to Lincoln:

Which resembles in appearance and intent the Roman statue to Jupiter:

The Presidency of Arthur is quite different than the Presidency of Truman going forth. I understand the reality of Nuclear War. What I don't understand is the cognitive dissonance of the "Don't Tread On Me" crowd and the desire to elect the Dear Leader to Nanny them forever and ever.

Very good friend of mind was born in England. Not far from London. His Dad played on the pro tour - years ago - and finished near the top on several British Opens. He later started a golf club manufacturing company that became very popular and was known worldwide. He ended up telling the world to go screw itself and living on an island somewhere. He stayed connected to his business interests but just disconnected himself from the population aspect.

I met his son when he reached out on a sports car forum as he had planned to fly into Orlando to pick up a car and wanted some help with the process. I reached out and he ended up driving over to my place and staying the night before heading back home to Michigan. We ended up hitting it off with some mutual interests...rockets, cycling, and sports cars in particular.

I didn't even know he was British until I spoke with him on the phone. Just thought a good opportunity to help out a fellow car guy.

This was over 24 years ago and since then I've been up to his place (we drove down to Indianapolis to watch the US Grand Prix) and he's been back here on a number of occasions...at least 3 times to attend rocket launches. He's married and has 3 kids - got his citizenship here so has dual citizenship. Successful in business with work with computer and software stuff.

No idea what his politics are - we've never discussed it. No reason to I guess.....same as with most of my friends. We're too busy talking about other more important stuff - things that matter to us. Our passions.

Right now we're exchanging Tour de France discussions. We do it every year. Of course he's excited the Manx Man (Mark Cavendish) finally got another stage win to break The Cannibal's (Eddy Merckx) record.

Great fun! :)

Since 1980, the Beach Boys and the Grass Roots had performed Independence Day concerts at the National Mall in Washington, D.C., attracting large crowds. However, in April 1983, James G. Watt, President Ronald Reagan's Secretary of the Interior, banned Independence Day concerts on the Mall by such groups. Watt said that "rock bands" that had performed on the Mall on Independence Day in 1981 and 1982 had encouraged drug use and alcoholism and had attracted "the wrong element", who would steal from attendees. During the ensuing uproar, which included over 40,000 complaints to the Department of the Interior, the Beach Boys stated that the Soviet Union, which had invited them to perform in Leningrad in 1978, "...obviously ... did not feel that the group attracted the wrong element." Vice President George H. W. Bush said of the Beach Boys, "They're my friends and I like their music". Watt later apologized to the band after learning that President Reagan and First Lady Nancy Reagan were fans. White House staff presented Watt with a plaster foot with a hole in it, showing that he had "shot himself in the foot.
