When the people of the colonies fired their imperial government and the other twelve colonies joined Virginia in independence.
There is a book on my bookshelves by Caroline Robbins called The Eighteenth Century Commonwealthmen. In it, Robbins explains about early eighteenth century Whig political theorists who explained that tyranny came from the King in Parliament buying the MPs off with titles and monopolies. These Commonwealthmen wrote pamphlets that made their way across the Atlantic and when Westminster ended its period of benign neglect and started trying to make money from the Colonies, the fuze was lit. The Americans connected what the Commmonwealthmen wrote to what they saw in British imperial policy and drew the conclusion that tyranny was around the corner.
John Brown Dillon, Notes on Historical Evidence in Reference to Adverse Theories of the Origin and Nature of the Government of the United States of America, (New York: S. W. Green, 1871), 56.Question.—That part of the rebel army that enlisted in the service of the Congress, were they chiefly composed of the natives of America, or were the greatest part of them English, Scotch and Irish?
Answer.—The names and places of their nativity being taken down, I can answer the question with precision. There were scarcely one-fourth natives of America—about one-half Irish—the other fourth were English and Scotch."
