I am bringing some friends down from Michigan for the A-Day Game and I heard that the Houndstooth was closed for remodeling. This will be their first trip to Tuscaloosa and to the Strip. Any suggestions on where to take them on Saturday on the Strip or else where for some "suds" prior to the A-Day Game?

Thanks in advance and Roll Tide!!

I don't know if tearing the old building down and rebuilding it counts as remodeling, but yeah...it won't be open until time for the 08 season. Maybe you should try the Red Shed, it's close to the stadium and it's about the same type of affair as the 'Tooth. It's behind Egan's.

Personally i like Wilhagens (sp?). Good food, plenty of beer on tap, pool tables, and dart boards, and its a nice place.

The waitresses there are border-line retarded and poor on service, but think they can play up being a cute college girl to get a tip. I mean, cute girls are fine by me, but try not forgetting about the pitcher I ordered or mishear me changing my order from one burger to another for me ordering two burgers THEN argue at me that I ordered two dinner plates when you serve me two plates inexplicably (like that makes any sense whatsoever...I like a good burger and some fries with my drinks but I don't even think I could down two whole plates).

I mean, I'm usually forgiving for bad service because restaurant managers try to spread their servers as thin as possible to save some cash instead of having enough workers on hand...but bad service at this place is almost as sure as the sun rising in the East...especially on a day when they have any large amount of business at all. I hate that this place has been so bad to me for so many times because it really could be one of the best sports bars in town. It probably has the best selection on tap in town, plenty of TVs, and your typical bar games (darts, pool, and some entertaining video games). It's just that the service has been consistently bad for me nearly without exception.

The Shed doesn't have any eats like Wilhagens, but it's the closest thing to the Houndstooth close to the stadium right now: cheap shots and pitchers.

I will agree that the service is bad there. However, I'm usually there for drinks anyways, so as long as they can get that right I'm happy. Me and my buddies did get great service there one time, but that was also the night that we all had extremely high bar tabs, so that might have had something to do with it. For me, the food is usually an after thought, after a few drinks.

About 10 years ago, I took a souviner from the Houndstooth. It's still hanging downstairs in my basement, it was a Bama schedule banner! I took it off the wall and folded it nicely and somehow got it out of the bar.

i didnt frequent the houndstooth ten years ago but if it was anything like it was the past several years...you could steal the bar and no one would notice. if you wanna drink till you get double vision and not be the only one....the houndstooth is where it was at.

I graduated in May '05 and afterward I took my family out on the strip. My 14 year old sister came along and I got her in by having her duck under the fence. We sat her down at a table and she never got caught.

On her way out she asked the bouncer why would he let a 14 year old into the Bar. The bouncer just dropped his jaw, and told us to leave... My sister is a pretty cool kid...

If anybody has any pictures of the Houndstooth that is currently under construction, post them on tidefans. I have not even seen what the new one will look like.

Right now it's nothing but foundation and steel beams. I live about a block down from the strip on University and will try to get some pics up sometime soon, but as of now there's not much to see. It looks like it might be two levels now though.

Steel Beams? Really? Good to hear that they are finally building something up to code on the Strip. Heard about the roof deck and was scared at the prospect of the place caving in on itself because of shoddy construction...

Hate to say it but some strip buildings need to be gutted and redone, at least the south side...ALOT of decrepit buildings right there, scares off alot of responsible companies that could look to come onto the strip... I heard about a possible parking garage, that would be good as long as it did not front onto University Blvd, but that may be hard to do. More parking for businesses. Keep raising land value so that we can raise the rent and therefore get some good, clean, well ran places in there....

Ever wonder how many bars on the strip have insurance, I would bet not all of them...

If this was done then it would raise the land value of the strip; outcome would be good for fans, students, university, town...

I lived in the Chateau Twelve apartments in 91-92 and the cops showed up one day looking for a guy that lived in the apartments. Apparently, he set the Houndstooth on fire one night after being kicked out. ;)

Houndstooth is nothing right now. They comepletely bull dozed it and are opening something brand new. Also if anyone's loking to go to The Library during A-Day it'll be closed by then. One of my friend's boyfriend's was the GM/bartender and they found out last week that the rent was tripleing because of the amount of fines ect they've built up, but no one knew about it until last week. And another one bites the dust...

I used to kick it over there at Chateau Twelve when we'd come to visit friends in Ttown in the early 90's.
