PROPOSAL

If regulation ends with a score that runs the time out:
a) coin toss
b) both teams get a possession
c) sudden death after first possession by each team (essentially the NFL rules)

If regulation ends with a team in possession of the ball:
a) no coin toss
b) continue the game from that point
c) that counts as the FIRST overtime possession of the team with the ball (meaning they CAN choose to kick a field goal, but if the other team scores a TD, the opponent wins)

I guess if necessary, you can have a rule that states if a team has the ball inside the opposing 40, we go to point one above - to prevent that team from running down the clock to force overtime if they had a first and goal at the four and then forcing the opponent to score just to get even.

The seven overtimes where you have to score makes more sense than the eight overtimes we had last night, five of which were nothing but "who can go three yards"?

Here's what I came up with after the 4th OT last night...

Make each OT after #2 be a different type of play...for example:
3OT - pass
4OT - run
5OT - QB Sneak
6OT+ - make it be like horse in hoops. 1st team gets to pick then 2nd team has to run same type of play.

It would add some variability.

Also, don't give Timeout for each OT. Give teams 2 timeouts at start of OT. Once they use them, they're out.

I see the current format in college as a worse idea than playing MLB Mickey Mouse extra innings.
Yep, that's why I was joking that overtime would begin with a receiver halfway to the end zone before the snap, LOL!!!

I honestly don't see why MLB can't just count ties in the standings and go on with life. If it costs a team, that's on them.

I don't know what the right solution is but last night was ridiculous.

At some point if two teams are THAT inept and one can't put the other away then just call it a Tie and make both teams go to a corner and think about what they've done while the fans are allowed to leave.

I didn't follow the thread last night, but I can only imagine this topic was bounced around.

Thought it might be good to centralize a discussion about this.

While I've been a fan of the college O.T. rules over the NFL for a long time, I've changed my mind. At least the NFL rules (which aren't perfect) at least involve the whole game as opposed to the current college rules.

What we saw last night was ridiculous!!! I never want to watch a game decided like that!

So other than having the announcers muted, what would you do to improve the way college O.T. is conducted???
Swapping 2 point conversions is like soccer penalty kicks which IMO is not the way to end a game.
So, here goes: No kickoffs. Offense starts on own 25 yard line. Game cannot end in a tie. Visiting team gets the ball in OT1 then alternating.
OT1: Put 15 minutes on the clock. Play until time expires with a winner.
OT2: Put 12 minutes on the clock. No FGs or kick extra points. Only TDs & 2 point conversions.
OT3: Put 9 minutes on the clock. No FGs or kick extra points. Only TDs & 2 point conversions.

I don’t get it, why does OT have to be some alternate style of the game we just played/watched for 4 quarters? Why can’t we be like basketball or extra time in soccer (during playoffs at least)? Coin toss and then slap 7 minutes on the clock and just play football. If it is still tied, do it again. This isn’t hard.

I’d like to see them start from the 35 and you have to go for 2 after a td. two rounds of that then it’s a tie.

Didn't all the talk about changing the college OT rules start with that Ole Miss-Arkansas game in 2003. I think they went to the 2 point tries to try and shorten the OT game. I don't know how to fix it, but if Georgia Tech had any imaginative 2 point plays, they probably win that game.

Nobody will like this idea, but I think a team should be forced to go for 2 after scoring a late TD if that means they can take a one point lead after a successful 2 point attempt. If the 2 point attempt fails, it would provide an exciting conclusion similar to what we saw in the 1992 Tennessee/South Carolina game.

I say start both teams on the 50 and give em 2 minutes to make any kind of score. Think of it like the two minute drill.
If first team don't score anything the second team can try, and maybe kick a field goal to win.

Here is mine. The second team always has to go for 2. Now the first team can go for 2 if they so choose, but if you don't get it, the second team no longer has to go for 2. Pretty sure this would end multiple OTs

Wait, so the first team could chose to kick an extra point but the second still has to go for 2? That's not fair and makes it like the NFL was when the coin toss decided the winner most of the time.
