Pending acquisition of funding (mostly, but not completely locked down….rising interest rates playing a role here), the decision has pretty much been made not to replace Coleman, but rather to build a new Competition Arena.

Coleman has a lot of stuff besides the most public-facing aspect, the basketball arena. Coleman also houses a practice facility and locker rooms for basketball, training facilities, meeting rooms with appointments similar to football meeting rooms (though obviously fewer in number with smaller capacity), offices for coaches and staff of not only basketball and gymnastics, but several other sports.

Plus, it was built solid enough to put a nuclear bunker to shame. It would cost well into nine figures to demolish and replace it with a new facility that could accommodate all the current functions.

So the plan is to have a new arena that would be for games / meets only. 9K - 10K capacity. Stands, premium seating, suites, locker room facilities, and all the ancillary whipsy-doodles. But no practice facilities or meeting rooms or coaches’ offices — those would remain at Coleman.

Siting is not finalized, but the parking lot on Campus Drive East, directly across from the softball stadium, is a prominent candidate.

I’d love to see what you could do modeling the competition arena.

Don’t know.

If I had to guess, it would be premium club lounge areas or recruiting areas, or both. Maybe some Basketball or Gymnastics Halls of Fame.

Or donor rooms like the Bryant Society Hall in Bryant-Denny.

But all of those are just guesses. I have no official or rumored information whatsoever.
