If Saban is offered and says no,

I'd point out that the last thing CNS would want would be anything to indicate that there was contact during the season. I don't regard these newspaper accounts as being the end of the story...

I know the Fins owner has stated he wants CNS to stay, but what if he has a .500 season next year? How many years will the owner put up with that performance? Even if he is fired from the Fins in one or two years CNS could easily find another good HC job in the college ranks, but would it be as attractive, contract wise, as the Alabama offer?

Maybe it is just me, but I would have to seriously look at the Alabama offer if I were truly unhappy in the NFL and I have had below average success up to this point. If he can't see great improvement in the immediate future what would make him think things are going to drastically improve?

And another thing, has CNS ever been fired for poor performance? Why take that chance in one or two more years when you can start with a clean slate in a program where you can achieve success in a reasonable period of time.

I think it's stating the obvious to say that, if CNS had any realistic hope of a better year with the Fins next year, there wouldn't be any point in making him an offer...

It was my understanding that the attorney was acting as as an agent, and, in that role, he's paid a percentage only. However, had I been put in that position, I would have asked to be paid at least for my time.
I'm sure the attorney/agent will have a hand in the new contract at WV. He may get stiffed on the contract he worked on at Bama, but I would imagine he'll come out OK with what he gets from the new WV contract.

Good point, Catfish. If they've signed a standard agency contract, then he'll get a % on the new WV contract. It won't equal what he would have received on a Bama contract, though. He wasn't what we needed, IMO. I want a coach who's not afraid of the challenge, sees the upside and wants to be associated with "Bear U."

JMO, I think we have a 50/50 shot at Saban at best, so there's always a chance he won't accept. I'm reading from several places that Petrino may get a call if Saban says no. I don't think Petrino is likely at all, which would be a waste of time, IMO. I'm thinking (based on what I've read in from the most credible stuff out there and am drawing a conclusion here), that the five after Saban is a mix of current NFL and college head coaches. I would think that those five have been discussed at great length on this board at some point. I think the deciding factor for Saban will be personal happiness/family and not money although that always helps. The other factor in play though will be his ego and the challenge of the NFL ie. can he leave knowing he will not have succeeded at that level?
You also have two NFL coaches that were fired today (Mora, Jr. & Green) and Parcells may be in trouble in Dallas. So if Saban says no, does the list/order change to include one or more of these guys?

Question of ethics and fan resentments/forgiveness

It has been a long while since really posting so I will start the new year off with what will probably be a thread that burns hotter than Whitney Houston's crack pipe.

As a prelude to this thread, let's assume Saban accepts the HC job.

Five years ago fRAN swore to everyone that he was not going to take the aTm job and was steadfastly going to be the UA HC for following years...then he bolted w/o even a reach A round. We were all in an uproar. How could he...how dispicable...how could he do this to our young men, fans, and great institution. We blasted him...even some referring to him as having man-breast (which is more than likely true). Fine let him leave but he will forever be hissed at by the UA fans and alike.

NOW, let's reverse the situation. Remembering the prelude, we are the team forutnate to get a hi-pro coach who, for the past months, has vowed to his team, fans, and organization that he was to be their coach of the future. The two scenarios sound too familure to not wonder about our on "fan morality". Who will be the first to spit in CNS direction when/if he elopes with another attractive suitor.

Here is my @ whole, I mean opinion. I would be thrilled if Saban were our coach, but if he wants the job, come out and proudly state it. Don't begin your time at UA over-shadowed by lies and deception. Let us all know you are excited about becoming the leader of our fine young men and look forward to creating traditions of your own. I know there is a buisness side to coaching at both the college and pro level, but come on. Either way you go, you get millions. Then again, maybe he has and some are to proud to be coachless.

Go ahead, flame back at me.

Re: Question of ethics and fan resentments/forgiveness

I'll just say there's a major difference in the way an NFL coach is required to act in situations like this. It's different. He has players that are getting paid huge amounts of money. He isn't influencing their lives at all. The season lasts quite a bit past the end of the college season, etc.

It's just different.

Re: Question of ethics and fan resentments/forgiveness

There are a bunch of threads on Saban and quite a few mentions of worries about the ethics of coaches and job changes. We don't need this as a separate thread, so I'll find a place to tuck it...

Re: Question of ethics and fan resentments/forgiveness

does it really make sense to you for him to come out and publicly announce his interest in any job, other than his current one, during the NFL regular season? It just does not happen.
