I don't know how many of you saw the end of the Sooners game this weekend, but Oklahoma was called for pass interference call where the ball was tipped. The play was challenged, and the announcers of the game were saying that instant replay could be used to determine if the ball was tipped or not. If the ball was tipped, then there could be no pass interference. The refs reviewed it, but (incorrectly) did not overturn the call.

This really surprised me because I did not realize that this was something that could be reviewed. If it is true, I think it is inconsitant that a team can challenge one particular aspect of pass interference, but not everything about it. I do think pass interference should be reviewable because it is the call that the refs miss most often, but all of it should be reviewable or none of it should.

Also, if instant replay can be used to determine if the ball was tipped, it makes the Auburn-LSU refs look even more foolish. The refs knew that it was a close play because they originally threw a flag and then picked it up. That should have definitely been reviewed.

Two things, NO replay can't be used for pass interference and it wasn't used to see if the ball was tipped in the Auburn game from what I've been told. We had already made our way into Bryant Denny by the time that play occurred, but I heard that the officials discussed the play and decided to pick up the flag themselves.

I should clarify. The only part that is reviewable is whether the ball was tipped or not. Not anything else.

A tipped ball by itself is not reviewable to my knowledge unless the person who tipped the ball was standing out of bounds at the time of the tip (such as the sidelines) to see if that would have then been a dead ball at that point. However, the tip was not reviewed in the Aub's game either...again from what I've been told and I did ask the question as to whether or not the play was reviewed and I've been told no.

According to the NCAA on-line rulebook, once a passed ball is touched, pass interference cannot be called. There is no mention of the ball being catchable or not. It just says that pass interference is not called on any contact made after the ball is touched...

Hmmmm, Coach Stoops was very demonstrative about the Refs and their calls/no-calls during the Oregon game Saturday!!

I wonder if the NCAA will fine him for his comments about the calling of a game?

Anyone know the rules on that one??:BigA:

The initial call on the field was defensive pass interference. That penalty got waved off due to the ball being tipped, which resulted in the call on the field being changed to no penalty. The penalty being waved off was wrong because the interference occurred before the tip, but the timing is only apparent after viewing the replay. The wave-off, like the initial penalty call, is not subject to instant replay. So the issue is a blown pass interference no-call, which happens all the time.

What I was saying was that in the OU game, the ball being tipped was subject to instant replay. Looking at the NCAA Rules,
ARTICLE 2. Reviewable plays involving passes include:
a. A pass ruled complete, incomplete or intercepted anywhere in the field
of play or an end zone.
b. A legal forward pass touched by an ineligible receiver.
c. A legal forward pass touched by a defensive player.
d. A fumble ruled on the part of a potential passer. (Note: If the on-field
ruling is forward pass and the pass is incomplete, the play is not
reviewable).
e. A forward pass or forward handing ruled when a runner is beyond the
line of scrimmage.
f. A forward pass or forward handing ruled after a change of possession.
g. A pass ruled forward or backward when thrown from behind the line of
scrimmage. (Exception: If the pass is ruled forward and is incomplete,
the play is not reviewable).

Unless he became overly profane, no fine. The fines come for public complaints, not sideline complaints...

The worst call they missed in the AU game was PI on David Irons in the end zone in the first half.. He was beaten and mugged the guy before the ball got there... That probably cost LSU 3 points.
