Is the Ohio st model sustainable?

I have no issue with the big spender universities. Thats the name of the game now and as the expression goes- adapt or die. My question is, is that kind of money sustainable for more than a few years? They are outspending the rest of college football and by reports a whole lot. Can you spend 25+ mill on a team while buying number one class year after year? I guess now that universities can handle the nil themselves it’s possible but at some point won’t everyone who can just spend that much and then the same 13 universities will be at the top every year

Who knows? Only time will tell with the sustainability aspect. I didn’t think anyone would be able to outspend UTw and ATM but OSU is giving it a shot. Heck, ATM collective still looking for a refund on the 22 class.

It will become interesting during coaching changes. Typically it takes donations to reach the buyouts in these contracts. Might be tough to do if $30 million is tied up in the team.

True, I somehow left Nike out of the conversation. They may be the true potential threat to OSU in the B1G. From an NIL money perspective.

If the Allstate big 12 is the only power conf to sell their name and take on private equity partnerships I think that’s one heck of a savvy move. They can spend and wheel and deal with the big boys. Top 10-15 classes looks easy with that boost. But if everyone does it they’re right where they were but now everyone’s sold out. As it is I think the acc is dead in the water unless they do the same

We are going to see how good of coaches these teams have that are spending all the big bucks. It is hard to hide bad coaching.

I think that’s part of the settlement they (ncaa) are currently negotiating.

I feel like a lot the changes you guys feel that makes it unrecognizable are easily walked back once the players are recognized as employees and they negotiate a cba. These kids will agree to anything if enough money is on the table. 18 and rich or the alternative of going undrafted and playing in the ufl……I think the bargaining strength is gonna swing back the to the universities and swing hard at that.

If I'm going to watch basically paid minor league players with no loyalty to the school except who's going to pay me the most money, I'll just watch the NFL and give up on college football. At least in the NFL, I can watch the best players and know basically who's going to be on the same team from one year to the next. It's not that way in college anymore. Greed has killed the golden goose, as we once knew it.

I'll be glad when and if it happens. It's all good, though, and we are turning into a basketball school.

At the present this is all new for everyone. I am waiting for the players to figure out that the "most quick" money is not always the best for their future. Sure, some of them will go for the gold with $$$ in their eyes. Others will want to enhance their future in the NFL with the best coaching and best draft potential.

aTm tried this a few years ago, spending 24-30mil. What happened 2 years later? Jimbo got fired and that class has moved onto the next highest bidder. I hope Alabama never goes that route…

Oh, believe me, coming from someone who has followed Bama football since Coach Bryant`s first year......It`s already unrecognizable from what it used to be.

To answer the OP, it depends on the answer to two questions:
1. Will tOSU continue this level of support on an annual basis?
2. Will there be a collective bargaining agreement for a collegiate analogue to the NFLPA?

I tend to doubt how often any school can go to the pay-for-play window. At some point, the donor bases of even the wealthiest schools gag.

Even aTm found that out. One year, sure. Two to three years, OK…..but you better be winning playoff games. Four years? IDK.

If there is no collegiate analogue to the NFLPA, the donor bases are going to run short.

At some point, the major schools will run into the conundrum that faces the IRS….there just aren’t enough truly deep pockets to keep funding the over-spending on to infinity.
