Is there a scenario where we still back into the playoffs?

Clemson is 17th now, and the committee doesn't like their resume or record. With a win they would make the CFP as an automatic qualifier, but stay behind Alabama. SMU would drop behind them and out of the race altogether. The winner of the Big 12 would also remain behind Alabama. This places Alabama at 10.
Wouldn't Clemson or the Big12 winner jump into the Top 4 by winning their Conf?

SMU would drop out leaving a vacant spot for a Champion

One of them would get the first-round bye but neither would be ranked in the top 4.

Discussions seem to float between rankings and seedings and causes confusion when I'm reading different posts.

I thought the Top 4 was set aside for the Top 4 Conf Champions

So if Clemson beat SMU....SMU would vacate a spot and Boise would either stay at 4 or move up to 3 and the higher ranked team between Clemson and the Big12 winner would get that other spot and the lower ranked one would get the #12 spot.

The CFP chairman said the main reason they put Bama over Miami (even though Miami only has 2 loses) was because Bama was 3 -1 against current Top 25 while Miami was 0-1. If Clemson beats SMU then SMU would be 0-2 against current Top 25. I'm hopeful Bama is going to be in.
They aren’t gonna watch SMU go 0-2 against the only good teams they faced and reward with a playoff spot. As much as I hate it, this whole thing is a sham just to get more “brands” in the playoffs. It benefits Bama, but it’s at the expense of the entire sport.

Interesting to see how they handle movement of this weekends games - related to your question and discussion about this - they don’t have to “move” the big 12 teams at all, or at least no worse than swap 15/16 ranking and one of those are still in, just lowest seed.

Not exactly same, similar could happen with ga/tx and or/ps, winner will be seeded in the top four spots, the others are at large, could move or not move as far as rankings, doesn’t really matter.
But bs/unlv and smu/cu , will how they handle above results influence what they do here? Too far apart to just switch their rankings, and if they didn’t rerank but seeded unlv and cu, then next teams seeded could go in order of current rankings, ie bumping 10 and 11 out.

Rationally, like most of us are thinking, surely will not be the case and we will see real rankings from this weekend’s teams, which mean we could move up at best and not move at worst. Still interesting to see how they contrast results between the closely ranked opponents vs further ranked teams if they see lower ranked winners.

The B1G and SEC will get four teams each. I'd take Ole Miss, USCe, or Missouri over Indiana but the numbers have been decided. Did Indiana play a single top 10 team? Did they play a single decent non-conference opponent? They have been placed 'safely' inside the top 12 for a reason...and it's not merit.

Indiana played only OSU, and got smoked.

In another episode of dumb reporting from SC this morning...

Heather D - If Clemson wins then Alabama is out, no mention of SMU potentially dropping out.

Paul F - Bama fans need to pull for Clemson so that they knock SMU out.

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard. An SMU win guarantees Bama is in. WTH is Paul talking about?

After the Vandy game, I said this team would not win a national championship and if I was wrong, I would have my name changed to IwaswrongRTR. I will still do this because I am a man of my word.
Now I'm hoping - more than I ever have - that we Let All Naysayers Know ! Let's go Bama ! Win one for the man!

Paul F admitted yesterday that this whole thing is an ESPN production. All of it. The CFP ranking show, the seedings, the arguments, the teams selected ... everything ... because it increases eyeballs on the CFP ... which are all ... ESPN. Self-dealing anyone?

Frankly, if we get in, I hope the CFB world goes mad. They hate us because we win. They hate us because we are Alabama. They hate us because we have had at least 2 of the greatest coaches who ever lived. They hate us because now we're also a basketball school. They hate us because we have nearly tripled student population in the last 25 years. They hate us because THE UNIVERSITY OF ALABAMA is the definition of how to do it right, year after year after year after year. They hate us because this is true, even when we're 9-3.

Built by Bama.

ESPN's "Allstate Playoff Predictor" has us at 86% chance to make the playoffs and SMU only at 68% and Clemson at 46%

No idea how that tool works though. But it seems like it is assuming SMU most likely drops below us if they lose.

As I’ve asked before, anybody else miss “ the bad old days” of the BCS and the computers picking the top 4? This whole committee process has borne out “ Be careful what you ask for “ IMHO.
