In the midst of an ongoing NCAA investigation into possible improper contact with agents and academic misconduct, North Carolina defensive line coach John Blake has resigned, effective immediately, the school announced Sunday evening.

Blake, who was reportedly a target of the NCAA's investigation into possible improper conduct with agents, was also the associate head coach and recruiting coordinator in his fourth season at North Carolina.

Looks like heads are beginning to roll.

I wonder how long this case will take and how many people will be involved at the end. Will this finally cause some change? The bad guys are still running loose while those who are innocent are suffering the punishment. That is just so, so wrong and goes against everything I believe to be right.

His resignation is the same as admitting his guilt. Wonder if another program would dare touch him? Maybe USCw, he'd fit in real good with that bunch.

I knew this was a matter of time when Marvin Austin was subpoenaed by the NC Secretary of State. I bet the info really starts to roll now. Marcell clearly spilled the beans on what he knew (rightly so), and with the season having started, the NCAA having A.J. Green on the cross, and with the state of North Carolina flexing its subpoena power, I bet a lot of players cannot shut up at this point. Suddenly a lot of people have incentive to talk.

This means either of the following three possibilities happened here:

(1) Blake knew of the agent / player relationships as they occurred (i.e. he was Pete Carroll).
(2) Blake facilitated the agent / player relationships (i.e. he was the go-between).
(3) Blake was the driving force behind it all (i.e. he actively shopped players and agents).

And it really doesn't matter which one it is if you are the Tar Heels. All three spell "lack of institutional control" for North Carolina. Pick your poison.

Truth be told, there is no telling how deep this will eventually run. The NCAA will dig and dig and dig, and the skeletons they find will probably be of Albert Means proportions. It's plain as day that UNC was doing it as dirty as possible and that there is not even a semblance of plausible deniability by those in power.

At this point the only real question is just which head rolls next. I don't see any way Butch can survive this, and with the ongoing academic scandal, the odds are that the entire athletic department is cleaned out before all is said and done. It's over, just a matter of sorting out the time of death for those involved. Going to make for a heck of a post mortem.

FYI:

Tennessee true freshman Corey Miller, a highly-touted DE out of North Carolina who was heavily recruited by Blake to UNC, tweeted with allegations that Blake attempted to give him money and set him up with women as inducement to get him to sign with North Carolina.

Not surprisingly, it has since been deleted. Nevertheless, it was posted, and that comes from the UNC people themselves.

When Steve Spurrier was asked about Blake, he declined comment other than to say that there were not many coaches he knew who were surprised to see Blake's name linked to agents and questionable benefits.

Miller went to Duncan, S.C. High School. I really hoped we could get him to come to Bama. Have often wondered how UT got him. Can now begin to imagine how titanic the battle between Davis and Blake and Kiffin and Ogeron must have been. :frown: Can only guess the UT hostesses won out.:)

It's going to be real interesting to see how the administration in Chapel Hill handles this.

UNC is one of the more academically-accomplished public schools in the country, and has a real air of superiority. Some might call it smug. I spent a year there, and they honestly believe themselves to be above the vulgar brawl of big-time athletics.

They conveniently ignore the fact that the basketball team has been getting special benefits for years, that's different and just never you mind about that.

They're going to have to fire Butch Davis or admit that they will sell their Saabs, Peugeots and hybrid Priuses to buy success on the football field. Not pleasant either way.

The question is does Davis make it through the season? If he is fired after the season I think Guz Malzahn is the front runner for the position if AU has a successful offensive year. Any thoughts?

If AU is successful, Malzahn will probably have his pick of jobs. He'd probably want to avoid a program that will most likely get hammered by the NCAA soon.

This is true... didn't think about after the season what UNC may be facing..

Gruden. It always was, always is, and always will be about the Gruden.

Is this worse than the Reggie Bush incident?

I don't know who knows the facts, but from what has been stated about Austin, it could be as bad or worse.
But combine it with the nanny-gate issue, and it becomes Langham/Means/textbooks all rolled into one.
