Kai Spears Sues NYT @ Reporting on Miles / Harris Murder Case

Well, we're about to get some transparency. Kai Spears has filed suit against the New York Times.

Spears says the NYT defamed him by placing him at the scene of the murder of Jamea Harris when he was in fact nowhere near there. The NYT says it stands by its reporting.

The article also includes what appears to me to be a tweet from Greg Byrne dated March 16, saying that the report putting Spears at the scene is inaccurate. What stands out to me is that Byrne went out of his way to say that UA wouldn't comment on the timing or nature of law enforcement's dissemination of information...yet he specifically calls out the news report on Kai Spears as false.

Greg Byrne is the best AD in college sports. I can't imagine him making that statement, especially under the media microscope he faced on March 16, without conclusive evidence that it's true.

Either Spears is lying and was actually there….in which case filing the suit would be monumentally stupid. Or The Gray Lady has some serious splainin’ to do.

Could get interesting.

Nobody really wins in situation. I don't know the situation, but either a normally good newspaper is totally wrong and digging their heels in, or there's some falsehoods going on.

Maybe they should have "assigned other reporting" after the statements by Spears, his father, and ADGB. I hope Spears is the new owner of this fishwrapper.

That's the correction. The story about correcting the original story is an exercise in self-flagellation of your bellybutton with a feather duster. But good to see the flabby bellybutton squirming nevertheless...
