Keelon Russell A-Day Film Study by JD Pickell - Me? I see Tua Flashbacks???

Amen... The bar is pretty low for the OL to be better. Watching the scrimmage it looked like they were getting to their man and holding blocks and even getting to the second level. Definitely better than the disorganized disaster of last year, where even if the picked up the right guy they got blown up way to often.

The REC scrimmage was a train wreck however in terms of the OL.

Idk if we will truly know until the Georgia game. If we could make it to the LSU game with 1 loss then I feel good about the season but we have a murderers row getting there. MSU and FSU will be tough games and going to Neyland isn’t a cake walk anymore.

I’m just not totally sold yet. I think we are a year away from having the team DeBoer wants, and I’m not sure if that team is a NC team.

I think we have a 2008 team entering the season with expectations and potential but we don’t have Saban reeling in expectations game to game. I think Deboer winning 9-10 games will be a sign of a good season with this team based on post spring assessments and schedule. But margin of error is very low.

Problem is, Mack is special too. CKD has said both are light years better than last year.
We've established the competition is still on, that AM was dinged up and it must've hurt his A-Day performance, and we know the coaches have spoken highly of both.

On that last note, that's "coach speak" because they want to let this competition play out.

I'm confident it will, but I think we (as fans) are whistling past the graveyard to ignore the difference in their recruiting rankings:

I asked AI to compare the recruiting rankings, which includes 247's Composite Rankings:

247Sports Composite Recruiting Rankings

National RankingNo. 1No. 215
Position RankingNo. 1 QBNo. 16 QB
State RankingNo. 1 (TX)No. 16 (CA)
Composite Score0.99980.9204
Star Rating⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5-Star)⭐⭐⭐⭐ (4-Star)

Understanding the Gap
  • The Reclassification Effect: Before moving from the 2024 class to the 2023 class, Austin Mack was ranked as high as the No. 53 overall player and the No. 7 QB in the country. His final ranking of No. 215 occurred because he was evaluated against older, more physically developed prospects after moving up a year.
  • Generational Status: Russell’s score of 0.9998 is nearly perfect, placing him ahead of former Heisman winner Bryce Young (0.9994) as the most talented recruit Alabama has ever signed at the position.
  • Transfer Value: After transferring from Washington to Alabama, Mack was given a transfer rating of 92 by 247Sports, ranking him as the No. 9 transfer quarterback in his cycle.

Hopefully our top 7-8 guys are fully healthy heading into the fall, have a good conditioning run in the summer, and we can select the top 5 quickly and just rep the heck out of them as a unit with an extra tackle and and extra interior player ready to go. I can't see how the revolving chairs helped anything last year.

Deboer and Grubb have said this also and are not going to play that rotation crap this season.

I know you are talking about the OL, but I think the same applies with the QB situation. I hope we name a starter by the end of fall camp and he can get as many reps as possible by game 1.

I think both QBs will play early, but I think it'll be better for 1 to get the majority of reps!
