Kevin Steele Retiring

Why do people want T Rob as DC? Good position coach but would be another first time guy who coached with some of Bama softest and weakest defenses under Saban. He could be great as a DC I just prefer a proven guy for the back end of Sabans time.

Yeah, we really don’t have time to be experimenting, or learning on the job. Although that is precisely what we are doing with Rees…

There is also a theory on hiring about hiring people that have shown leadership and paid some dues. T-Rob has 16 years of Coaching Experience. I'm not necessarily on anyone's bandwagon, but I would be OK if CNS decides to go that way. He was DC at USCe!

I did forget he was DC under Muschamp. I am trying to look up those stats.

*Edit *
Just glanced over them. Not super but not bad at all. Hard to judge though with him being under Muschamp and his control/anger problems. But I just have a hard time wanting anyone that isn’t a little more proven. Of course coach knows what he is doing either way.

According to his bio, TRob was the DC at South Carolina for several years, so it's not like he has no experience in the position.

i think experience is not as necessary as what many believe. The two names that constantly come up like Pruitt and Schumann both went from position coach to DC without ever having college DC experience. I think understanding the system, recruiting abilities, and how to make adjustments while using the system are the most important aspects of being the DC at Alabama.

You’re using anomaly vs standard. You kind of named the responsibilities as a DC as the aspects lol but yes those but more so the ability to teach and motivate the players I hope are ahead of recruiting. Golding could recruit and understand the system but was bad at coaching/teaching his position group much less the whole defense. TRob might be awesome but idk, he did come in 2022 so not a lot of time under Golding which gives hope that stink didn’t rub off on him. He is a very good position coach.

okay but Kirby Smart only had 1 year as a DC at Valdosta St before jumping to be a GA at FSU. Never had experience between then and 2008 at being a DC. Golding and Kirby might as well be the same with experience entering the role as DC at Alabama. However Golding had more years as a DC altogether than Smart. The major difference is Smart spent 3 years under Saban before ascending to the role. Whether people like to admit it or not… this is Saban’s defense and always has been. There may be tweaks to it from coordinator to coordinator but it’s still Saban calling the shots.

Yes, Kevin Steele reiterated that during his Rose Bowl interview.

Probably why someone like Leonhard would not likely come.

i don’t think that’s the issue. Leonhard had a weird buy out at Wisconsin that had huge financial consequences if he took certain jobs in 2023. That’s a huge reason that he is an analyst at Illinois and not a defensive coordinator.

He would not be a first time guy.

He was the DC at an SEC school for like 5 years.

Right Saban and Kirby have groomed guys didn’t argue that. I didn’t like the Golding hire from the beginning don’t think most did as far as his experience.

I do think Saban has stepped back more while Golding was here. Still his defense but not like in the past. If not than think of the bad coaching and schemes while golding was here like two or one d lineman in the game against running teams. So I hope that was not Saban lol What in the last two years has you wanting TRob is more my point. Just think I would like a more sure thing this year in a Steele at the minimum to a better hire. Not saying TRob would not be a great hire. I think he is more aggressive than Golding so that’s good. This past year was definitely an improvement and I’m sure he had a hand in that.

Working with Muschamp is a handicap...
