Lack of turnovers

Bama has created 1 turnover this year - Anderson's pick six against ULM. Having so few turnovers is unprecedented for Bama. In the past 30 years the fewest turnovers after 5 games is 7. So we are in uncharted territory. Bama is -3 in turnovers for the year. Bama was even -1 in the ULM game because Bryce threw 2 picks. Only 3 other teams have 1 or 0 turnovers - Notre Dame (2-2) , Stanford (1-2) , and Fresno State (1-2). Those teams are +1, -15, and -15 in scoring margin per game. Bama is +41.

If you look at the other teams with large scoring margins (Bama is #1 at the moment) you'll see all of them are at least +3 for the year. So it's unusual for a team to have big margins but also not feast on turnovers.

The good news is that this doesn't seem like it can hold up. So when Bama starts to get turnovers it will lead to more success. That and eliminating untimely penalties can led to the team being pretty decent after all. Bama was -1 in both losses last year. Bama was -1 in each of the losses to LSU and AU in 2019.

In other words, win the turnover battle and the game is a Bama win.

Are the DBs not turning to look for the ball? We've had several almost interceptions. Tackling is important, but surely we can force a few fumbles. We'll see going forward.

They are not taught to look back while "in phase" because Saban believes that when a DB looks back he slows down and organically creates space between the DB and the WR.

part and parcel to this is that other teams scheme to eliminate our pass rush. They do this by utilizing the quick pass. Our defense has done a phenominal job of tackling in space against this scheme. This decreases the ability of DB's to read and jump routes (which our defense isn't really designed to do unless we are running zone). Alot of our packages mix man and zone. Those quick outs are usually man routes. We have put our hands on the ball a couple of times (drops) when teams attempted to throw while we were in cover 2 and cover 3. The Pics will come as we progress to greater competition. Once we get out to leads and teams are forced to throw further down field.

Teams are throwing back shoulder passes because it's only way to get ball down field.

I highly suspect we will not see Jefferson extend the ball over a pile of Bama defenders in this game. Hopefully, the running backs will be trying to recklessly get extra yardage and some turnovers will result to Bama's favor.

Highly unusual. And the Anderson pick six roused my ears when I heard it. I knew that was our first.

As to why? Could be our style of defense these days ... bend, don't break.

Even still, just means we are due and we'll probably get them against better competition when we really need them. I would totally be cool with that when it happens.

My God, Saban is so conservative! But it has paid dividends because most QBs and WRs at this level have to play dang near perfect to beat us. And that's when we've had our losses, as Gary is TOO quick to point out.
