You guys probably remember Arthur Brown from the 2008 class... consensus five-star linebacker, many considered the #1 player in the country, and the older brother of Bryce Brown. He, of course, signed with Miami.

Since then, he has pretty much been a bust. He racked up all of about 15 tackles in two years, and could never start on a mediocre ACC team. He's really never been anything more than a special teams player. And today news is breaking that he has left Miami:

Linebacker Arthur Brown, once considered the top recruit in the 2008 class, has left the University of Miami.

Brown withdrew from school recently, according to a source close to the situation. Brown was unavailable for comment, but the source said the move was not football-related. Brown would have been a junior this fall. He didn't workout with the team Tuesday. UM media relations confirmed Brown returned home to Kansas to be with his family.
No major shock, really, and I wouldn't be overwhelmingly surprised if the same thing happened to Bryce in a couple of years. Handler issues notwithstanding, it seems pretty clear to me that those two were overrated and really took advantage of some weak high school competition.

It does make it harder to judge talent when you can't be sure about the talent they are facing. This is one of my concerns when looking at kids from a 1A program here in Alabama for example. They may be awesome or they may simply be better than anyone else on the field. If no one else on the field will get a D1 offer shouldn't they look impressive?

Arthur Brown did seem like a pretty decent guy though and Saban did think enough of his talent to offer him a scholarship.

He always said nice things about his visit to Alabama and about the program in general. In Brown's statement where he eliminated Alabama, he wrote good things as well.

He was a far cry from the recruit this year that called Alabama's offense "boring" and wondered why he'd want to go to Alabama since all they do is hand the ball off to whats his name.

The whole handler thing just didn't seem quite right though. I can understand the theoritical usefulness for a person that is familiar with the process to help navigate the families and recruits through the whole thing, but I don't think a "handler" is the right approach since there is so much room for corruption and abuse.

Remember him well. Finebaum interviewed his pimp--sorry, 'handler'--on his show one day. Several years from now I have a feeling Keenan Allen and Arthur Brown will have a lot in common.

Yet another example of a recruit that got caught up in the hypnotic sway of a 'handler' that--probably--just basically auctioned him off the trading block to the highest bidder. Sad.
