Legitimate question: Are we overrated???

Right now, as one of the 7 undefeated Div. 1A football teams in America, we deserve to be ranked in the top 7, at the very least. Based on what I have seen in the games played by those undefeated teams, 5th seems about right.

Now, if you are asking whether we will still be ranked in the Top 5 when the season is over and the Bowl games have been played, I am forced to guess. Realistically speaking, our starters are as good as any others in the country - but our depth creates a potential problem. Even if we lose noone else to injury, our starters spend a lot more time on the field than many of the other teams that we still have to face. Over the course of a season, players that are overused wear down. That could cost a game or two. If we lose another key player to injury, we could fall even further.

So enjoy the #5 ranking. It may not last, but this team has earned it. And a 10 win season is all but in the bag, and I would have taken that in a NY minute before the season started...

Amen to that idea. Being overated means that there are more deserving teams below you in the standings. Looking backwards, only a few teams could present convincing arguments for being rated above us. As for UT, we will get back to our "normal selves" (that is, when we play big games). Because of our youth and inexperience, we are playing to the level of anticipated intensity of the game. Against UT, I fully expect our guys to come out playing like they did against USC and UF. However, when we play the lower regarded teams, I am afraid we will see repeats of the Ole Miss, USM, etc. games (will not put on the dominating show that we are capable of).

Florida and Tennessee may have been overrated, but I can't say we are. We scrap out wins, although they may not be pretty at times. What is apparant is that we get up for the BIG games with Florida and SC being prime examples. With UT being the next BIG game, I think we should put a lid on the Overrated label.

I really think we could play with anyone in the nation after saturday's ND vs. USC. USC has shown they are beatable the last few weeks. Texas would be hard to handle. We can handle VTech. They have played NO ONE this year and i am hearing it being 45 minutes from BBurg. They have played Duke, ohio and marshall. and we will see Georgia in the SECCG.

Are we overrated? It depends on which team you're talking about - the team that played USC and UF or the team that played Ark and OM.

Fact is, we're one of only 7 teams (I think) that are still undefated in D1A.

Wait, is this 1992?

USC is a fine football team, but they have showed how beatable they are the last two Saturdays. Arizona epitomizes the term "mediocre," and Notre Dame is not as good as they think they are. USC still has to face capable opponents in Cal and UCLA, the latter of which is also undefeated.

Texas is, IMHO, the best team in the country right now. I just don't see any weaknesses at all. Offense, defense, special teams. They're all playing lights out.

VT is good, but not great. They squeaked by NC State in the season opener, and they haven't played anyone of significance yet since then. They have Miami, BC and Virginia left, and if they survive they face the Atlantic Division champ in the conference title game.

And, if Bama takes care of business, they meet Georgia in the SECC.

Texas... That team just plain scares me. No one else does, though.

From reading some of the posts on this site, I think there will be a lot of Bama "fans" who will actually be dissapointed if/when Bama wins this whole thing.

I'm for dissapointed the heck outta them!

On a scale of what?

Two national articles I read online Sunday stated our Defense could be
playing on sunday and yes this was after the Ole Miss win.

Now, after seeing SC I am not going to even ask if they should be #1
Texas is fast and hungry and I feel they deserve their ranking

VaTech? dark horse and I just don't know

But Bama over rated? How many un defeated teams are left in the country?
6/0 and in the SEC and playing against all odds and still there are questions
I thought the questions were suppose to be answered after Florida game but I suppose the Ole Miss win raised more.....even when you win you can't win!
I swear there are people you couldn't please no matter what you do and CMs knows that.....Bowl eligible and are we over rated-----why not ask somebody if they would rather be 5&1? RTR

That is a difficult question . . .

The only decent team we have played so far is Fla, but they are looking far less impressive as the season uunfolds. However, we are one of seven undefeated teams in the top 25, so by my estimate we should be at least in the top seven. So if we are overrated, it is not by much.

Blue Devil Tide said:
Tennessee fans will be beyond retarded (and that is saying something) if they call us overrated. So far they are -14 in rankings from the preseason to this week. So don't fear hearing that, because they'll look dumb themselves. We should still be ranked above them if the Vomiteers actually do beat us, which won't happen. We'll have one loss (likely close, if anything, given their offense) whereas they'll have two losses, conference losses.

That said, we are not really a Top 5 team in the purest sense, but look at the top 5. USC would tear us a new one, Texas would be a tough match up, and while I think we could handle Vick with our defense, Brodie and the men would have a tough time with VTech. Special Teams with Beamer versus ours is also a plus for them. Georgia is beatable, however, and we should find that out in Atlanta. Enough tape study of Shockley and with our LB's, the QB and TE threats should be tied up. The UGA defense is quite good, but with a little daylight, Darby can burn them.

We are Top 10 material, though. And a big Roll Tide to that!

Man I totally disagree with this. When USC won their first title in this run Lienart was a sophmore and Bush was a freshman I believe. I dont think that in a game that mattered that Alabama would wilt at all against either USC or Texas or esp Va Tech. I am not saying you are doing this but dont underestimate real tradition, our talent and what we have been through the last couple of years with Texas beating Mizzo, Va Tech beating NC State ( or whomever) or USC beating ND. In my mind if we lost in a game like that it would look like the USC ND game. We might just win it too.

Thing is, USC's offense is spectacular. Amazing. They haven't faced a really good defense yet, although they annhilated OU's last year in the bowl. That's a different USC team, granted, but Leinart/Bush/and that OL can score on anyone, us included. Bush and White average ungodly numbers per carry...it's bizzare, almost.

Texas is all about Vince Young. If we could pressure him enough to disrupt him, they'd fall apart. Their defense is still quite solid, but I think we could still score enough on them. The first real mobile QB we'd face this year would be Georgia if we get that far. So it's tough to say what we'd do to them. VT is pretty similar to Texas as well. Shut down Vick, open it up on their D, and it's winnable. But if Vick or Young get hot, they'd blow us open I'd say. Do we have depth to compare against a Texas roster full of in-state superstars? True they normally underperform (last title was 1969) but we've also never beat Texas.

UGA is beatable, and a certainly winnable game. We might be able to hang with USC or Texas, and beat VT and can definitely beat UGA. But will it happen? We'd need a lot of breaks and NO injuries from here on out. None.

In my opinion I dont hink we are overrated. In the past teams with less than impressive wins over D1AA opponents in their first 4 games have been ranked top-5.

I think in 2000 we were overrated to start the year. Now 6-0 when only 7 teams are undefeated I dont think so. 4-0 in the SEC. Impressive wins over South Carolina and Florida. Sure those teams may not be great right now, but UF was 5th at the time and USC has the Ol Ball Coach.

Too early for SECCG/NC talk, YES!

let's enjoy the ranking and don't worry about it...the games will decide all this in the end...many thought we were over-rated in '92, but we proved on the field we weren't...let's see how it plays out...enjoy our moment in the sun, we've had many dark days over the last few years

I don't think it should be a question of are we over rated. I don't think we are. I think are we back to where we belong is perhaps a more accurate question.

My answer to that is not quite but we are on the way. While we are still 7 schollies down, we are weaker than that in that a number of walk ons were awarded schollies which would not normally have been given. I like CMS steady progress which realize a strong program, not just a strong team. RTR
