The US has endured an average of 1.5 mass shootings every day so far this year, data shows

The US has suffered at least 385 mass shootings so far this year, according to the Gun Violence Archive, which defines mass shootings as those in which four or more victims are shot.

That’s an average of more than 1.5 mass shootings every day so far this year.

The 385 mass shootings include Wednesday’s deadly rampage at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia. At least four people were killed and at least nine people were hospitalized with injuries, according to authorities

Thoughts and prayers incoming...

I don't know what the gun laws in Georgia are. Can a 14 year old walk around with a gun and nobody can do anything until he starts shooting?
I'm sure there is a prohibition against bringing one to school but in general terms can a teenager walk down the street in Georgia armed?

Illegal for anyone under 18.

Data from Columbia Mass Murder Database reveal psychosis and other serious psychiatric illness absent in the majority of perpetrators

A research team at Columbia University Irving Medical Center and the New York State Psychiatric Institute (NYSPI) examining 82 mass murders that occurred at least partially in academic settings throughout the world found that most mass murderers and mass shooters did not have severe psychiatric illnesses.

The research(link is external and opens in a new window), published online Oct. 27 in the Journal of Forensic Sciences, according to study authors, is the largest analysis ever conducted on mass school shootings.

“Our findings suggest that mass school shootings are different from other forms of mass murder and that they should be looked at as a distinct phenomenon,” said Dr. Girgis, director of the Center of Prevention and Evaluation (COPE), a research clinic at Columbia/NYSPI specializing in the study and treatment of young adults at high risk for schizophrenia and other psychoses. “To prevent future mass school shootings, we need to begin to focus on the cultural and social drivers of these types of events, such as the romanticization of guns and gun violence, rather than on individual predictors.”

The 14-year-old suspect in the fatal mass shooting at a Winder, Georgia, high school has been identified as Colt Gray, Georgia Bureau of Investigation Director Chris Hosey said at an afternoon news conference.

The suspect is a student at Apalachee High School who will be charged with murder and will be handled as an adult as he moves through the criminal justice system, Hosey and Barrow County Sheriff Jud Smith added.

FBI was tipped off about shooting suspect a year ago, agency says

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office previously interviewed the Apalachee High School shooting suspect and his father in 2023 regarding anonymous tips about online threats to commit a school shooting, according to a news release from the FBI’s Atlanta Field Office.

The online threats were made in May 2023 and were accompanied by photos of guns. The anonymous tips were submitted to the FBI’s National Threat Operations Center and relayed to the Atlanta Field Office and the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office for further action.
Colt Gray, who was 13 at the time, and his father were then interviewed by the sheriff’s office. The father said he had hunting guns in the house but his son did not have unsupervised access to the weapons. The teen denied making the online threats, and the sheriff’s office notified local schools to monitor the situation.

The release said there was no probable cause for arrest or further law enforcement action at the time.

Rumor now sez...
It turns out the FBI had Colt on their RADAR for two years.
But they didn't do anything about it... They referred it to the County as a Juvenile case
Now folks are saying Colt came from a criminal family.
I don't know what the world is coming too

Winder is the center of what has been called "The Dixie Mafia." I listened to a podcast about it at least 7 years ago. Here's a link to the YouTube podcast. FBI did get involved, but apparently it still functions at some level:

One of very few tools we have is to make the punishment of the parent, who made access to the weapon possible, as harsh as possible…so harsh that it generates national news and puts other gun owners with kids in the house on notice.
Yep, if your gun is used in a crime you should be charged as if you pulled the trigger.

Mass shootings and deaths are clearly the price we as a nation have accepted for the freedom for nearly anyone to own guns. The only solution I see is to require insurance/tax guns for the full cost they impart on our country.
You may have accepted this but I do not. The 2nd amendment has been manipulated and distorted by gun lovers because this is not the "freedoms" it was intended to protect. Let's use some Trump rhetoric; it's time to fight, fight, fight against the gun loving culture in this country.

Kid was even named after a gun, our culture sucks

Uh, back in the 80's and 90's people were made fun of for pointing this very thing out. Violence started becoming s big part of music, music videos, and video games. I distinctly remember those who pointed to the video games and music were completely made fun of. So now are we saying those people were right and we should have listened to them?

Honestly, what should have been done? I'm seriously asking. Should the kid have been arrested at that time for the online post? How long do you keep him in jail? Even if he was arrested, we still probably get to this day after he was released since the right refuses to try and limit access to guns in this country.

Maybe the MAGA crowd is on to something though. Defunding public education and shutting these schools down might actually help protect kids and prevent some deaths.

I'll give one solution that my sons HS has implemented this year that has paid HUGE dividends. Beginning this school year our school district has banned all cell phones during school hours. You can have your phone on you but it better not be out. The consequences for having it out are severe.

Is anybody interested in the short-term results of only one month of school? The fights on the middle school and HS level have dropped by 80% compared to year over year for the same time frame. That's right, 80%. These kids live in a perpetual digital world that they never unplug from and the result is 100 times the social stress that comes along with being a teen. It's amazing that removing just that component has made that type of positive difference on our campuses.
