Eye-popping stat of the night...

cbssports.com said:
Eaglestaff went viral by banging home eight 3-pointers while (according to Jared Berson) becoming the first mid-major player to score 40 points in a non-league home game against a top-10 team since Loyola Marymount's Bo Kimble scored 46 in a loss to No. 7 Oklahoma in 1989.

That was ugly. Horrible defense against a team they should be able to shut down with superior athletes. Don't understand why Oats didn't put Reid on their stud or double team the guy.

Need to hope this team steps up when they get into the SEC. Because the SEC is a beast this year.

Didn't watch the entire game, fell asleep. It definitely was a play down to your opponent type of game for us. Still seems like we're having trouble closing out teams.

Went on a little run in the first part of the second half and thought we'd finally put them away and went to sleep. Guess that didn't happen.

Eaglestaff is something else. Very interesting last name.
As I posted above, I believe he's part NA. I noticed the Oriental fold in his eyes and put it together with his name...

There are games when a guy like Eaglestaff just goes unconscious. He was making contested and non-contested. Our guards are undersized and he's 6'6". A lot of the shots, he made right over them. He had a Steven Garcia night. I wonder how much eligibility he has left. Think they said he's a soph, but there's more to it...

Was not ugly or horrible d in 2nd. The guy had a game of a lifetime and a couple others of theirs did as well. We tried different defenders of all height and also tried to double but then they had a guy open and nailed the three. They just played well above their heads especially in the second half. Bama did have sloppy d in first and lazy offense though.

Agree the team has some work to put in. Not sure if they have it to win SEC unless Youngblood gets a lot quicker and Sears can find a middle ground if hero ball and what he was last year.

Anyway we can get Eaglestaff to transfer to us next year just a thought?

I checked the ND roster and that's an international team, with a few Americans. They're from everywhere from Guinea to Georgia (the one under Russia). Some are from JCs and don't list another country but don't have typical first or last American names. Their dirtiest player (IMO) had a name ending in "vic" ("son"), so probably Balkan somewhere. With a first name of "Amar," I doubt his being a 1st generation American...

May not want to leave - 'cause you gotta admit Eaglestaff of the UND Fighting Hawks has a certain dignified symmetry to it. Of course, if he were Eaglestaff of the Fighting Sioux before political correctness stripped UND of their longtime nickname, 'Bama mighta gotten Little Big Horned out there...

If he fits Oats' plans, I would not be surprised to see him try. We could use a tall guard. He's unguardable by a short guard, and his shot-making ability is downright Curryesque. I was glad their bigs mostly sucked...
I didn't see the game but it sounds like you are describing a player like Dalton Knecht.

Guys tend to go atomic bomb hot when they play us for some reason. Bad defense is one thing but Kentucky last year comes to mind, when we had very contested shots just find the bottom time after time. Like you hinted at, that's basketball. With that being said, we definitely need to fix some issues and keep getting better.

There is absolutely nothing to be gained from playing games like this. We probably beat them by 25 in Coleman.
I see the opposite. When you discount an opponent, or you mismanage your travel preparation, this is what you can get. It's definitely a good lesson without a loss for the team.

100% agree. I fully expected an easy win but we got a dogfight instead that we could have easily lost. That may have done more to get our minds right than if we had won easily.

This team has all the pieces and parts to win a lot of games and go deep in the big dance in March/April but we haven't gelled yet. I may be wrong but I think we will see CNO start to tighten down on the substitution patterns and when we start conference play I think we will start to see this team coming together and playing better. We may still struggle a bit early on in conference play as we're still figuring things out but I think we'll be ok.

I said as much a while back but CNO needed to dial back the expectations just a bit instead of adding fuel to the fire which created an unrealistic expectation of this team. We're as talented as any team in the country but talent alone is not enough. We're not going to just roll out 5 guys and beat everyone on our schedule and score 100 points each game. The players have got to play up to their ability every game and the coaches have to coach their rear-ends off for this team to reach their potential. Even then it takes some luck with being hot at the right time, getting the right matchups in the tournament, and remaining mostly healthy to go far in the tourney.

I didn't see the game either. Eaglestaff shoots over 38% 3-pointers; similar to 39% of Knecht. This is higher than anyone on Bama's roster with a significant number of attempts except for Wrightsell.
And he had a man in his face on many of those shots. I believe the play by play guy said we rotated 5 different players on him. He had Reid and Stevenson in his face several times. I remember one possession where he kept trying to drive on Stevenson and just couldn't get around him.

If you take the arithmetic mean of our active shooters, subtracting Wrightsell, it's a paltry 25.2. Of course, that's dragged down by Sherrell's 18.8, but it's got Mallette at 50% (he's shot only two). Our effective team percentage is much better, because so many of our 3s are taken by Sears. Our season average is 34%, but that was with Wrightsell's 42% added in.We need badly for Youngblood to get up to speed in more than one way. Our edge in offensive rebounds took away a lot of the potential damage of their 3pt shooting, since they seldom got their hands back on the ball after a miss, but that advantage goes away quickly in SEC play. Their team trey average is 34%, the same as ours...
