McCarron in the NFL

I think the days of drafting a guy, letting him sit behind a guy a year or two and then become starter are over in the NFL. The recent success of rookies has apparently changed that thinking to "throw them in, see how they do". Take a look at Geno Smith and the Jets. There's just no way they could have looked at him and said he's ready to be a successful starter in the NFL.

I think that's probably true of most first round picks and certain positions, like RB. But I don't think AJ will be a first round pick.

First, Geno wasn't worthy of a first round pick, which is why he went to the second round.

Second, we're talking about the Jets. That organization is in shambles.

Question! How tall is AJ? He doesn't look all that tall until I see him standing by Saban and then he looks really tall. Does height help in the NFL? Of course the taller, the further down field you can see.

If I had my wish for AJ, it would be to go to the Patriots, and back up Brady. He has been compared to Tom Brady, and sense AJ would never be a threat to unseat Brady, he could learn so much under Brady. And when Brady decides to retire, then AJ would have a great grasp of the system, and maybe be set for success.

AJ is listed at 6'4".

For comparison:
Aaron Rogers - 6'2"
Tom Brady - 6'4"
Peyton Manning - 6'5"
Drew Brees - 6'0"
Russell Wilson - 5'11"

He was pretty much a career backup, but he was good in a pinch. He led an awesome comeback against Detroit. My dad played with him at Banks, and has nothing but good things to say about him to this day.

I hit a home run against Banks in my first at bat of the season(only one I hit all year) in my senior year of 73 at Walker High School. Jeff played shortstop for them.
When I rounded second he tapped me on the butt with his glove and said, "Nice hit man".
Never forgot that. Very classy guy, incredible athlete and QB, with one of the longest NFL careers of any Bama player ever.
True, he didn't start many games in the NFL, but he was good when he did, and, by holding those extra points for so long...he stills gets a very nice NFL pension check every month.
A.J. and Jeff are very similar IMO. A.J. may not be Joe Namath, but I think he'll hang around the NFL for quite awhile.
Whether he will be a starter or not will depend on the system he gets drafted into.
sip

AJ has that "something " that is not taught, it's a gift. I really would like to see him go to a good quality team. He will go by the end of the 2nd round I think because he will do very well in the combines.
if Tampa had recievers that could catch a football I would love to see him here, but a it is now NO.
I hope he stays away from NOLA, Cleveland, Jets, Indy,Chargers, Seahawks, 49ers, Washington, Panthers, Jags. Other than that Im good.

I have stood firm since AJ's sophomore year that he would could peak as a 2nd round draft pick because of our system. I am wondering how much this season improved his stock? Probably not a whole lot, but another year of consistency should raise the odds that he will be chosen in the 2nd round. The trend is towards the athletic QB with brains, but the Alex Smith types continue to win. I see AJ as an eventual starter, our 1st long term since Richard Todd, and that's a long time.

Being a 2nd round QB is a great thing and I bet AJ would be happy with that result.

Seems like a bright kid. I personally think he's not being utilized at Alabama. I think the run game is too good to throw all the time. I think him getting drafted in the late 2nd or late 3rd would be great for him. If he lands on a team with talent, I think he could be a good starting qb. To me seems you need to be competitive, smart, and accurate are the most important qualities of a nfl qb.

Seems like the NFL wants so badly for Dual Threat QB's to upgrade the position, but it has been difficult. At first all that mattered was arm and legs (VICK), but It seems like many scouts have figured out that they must have leadership skills and brains to go along with it(duh). The 2nd generation prototypeis is Colin kaepernick, brains and athleticism. It is yet to be seen if an offense can be designed to win a championship around such a player. If they do, it may spell an end to the tall nerdy pocket passer as the dominate figure, but I am not banking on it anytime soon. But Chip Kelly's success has been a positive. Football is going the way of the NBA from the 70's-90's, fast break. Hope they even the playing field, the defenses are getting the shaft.

You are seeing now the dual threats are getting hurt. McNabb, Moon, Cunningham were all dual threat. They all turned into pocket passers in a year or two. Russell Wilson doesn't really run like he did last year. This year he is running to open up the pass. I think this little experiment will be over soon. The zone read is basically dead in the NFL. Being able to scramble is still a plus though.

New and trying to learn more about the game and Alabama history etc I watched thewhole of the NCG v LSU from 2012, AJ's first year playing (I think) as a Sophomore(wouldn’t that have made him a red shirt freshman and left him with one moreyear of eligibility?), in my opinion he was the difference in that game.

Yes the Defensive line was unbelievable, possibly the best ever (commentatorswords), but LSU’s defense wasn’t exactly shabby either. I think had the 2 quarterbacks been reversed,AJ & LSU would have won that game.

I don’t get to see many Alabama games, only seen 2 this year LSU & Auburn, asI have no choice of games I can only see what UK ESPN are showing. The AJ I saw this season seemed to be muchmore restricted than the AJ I watched last night against LSU. I assume that AJ is still in there, I alsothink if he were to have that sort of freedom to drive the offence he had inthat game against LSU he could go to have a very successful NFL career.

I think McCarron's durability will be a big plus for him. Unlike more recent Alabama quarterbacks he can make all the throws though I believe he struggled with the longer throws this year due to a bum shoulder. I believe teams will view him as a #2 currently which should put him in the 2nd to 4th round. I believe #2 is going to get more attention this year as we have seen several very good teams go in the tank after the starter was injured while so-so teams with better backups surge forward. Years ago every team felt their #2 was key to success. Teams have tried to cheat and cross their fingers and they are paying the price. None more than Green Bay who went from one of the best teams to the worst. Having an AJ McCarron would have been key for them this season but they had to make that decision long ago. Perhaps they have learned their lesson.

AJ started in 2011 and came off the bench in 2010. He has all the tools. I think he'll make a fine pro.

I could be wrong, but I thought AJ was able to audible at the line and has done so.

Correct, he can. Our system is so radically different from Auburn's that both the QB's would probably fail in the other system! Marshall has to look at the sideline for a last second audible from the puppet master, maybe he has some decision making similar to a wishbone QB once the play starts. Wondering if Del Rio wore the headset later in the season......seemed to help prepare both Greg and AJ to succeed out the gate.
