More NIL Craziness (MI offers LSU commit $10+ million)

Bryce Underwood, a rising hotshot QB from Belleville, MI committed to LSU about a year or so ago. Just heard that Michigan has now offered him a $10.5 million deal over four years to flip to Michigan. Whether he flips or not is up in the air, but I wish I could have been set for life when I graduated college. This stuff is getting beyond crazy. Sorry if this is in the wrong forum.

That's $2.6 milly/year. Honestly, that doesn't sound like that great of a deal. If I'm a player I'd want to keep my options open and just play on a year-by-year basis. That is if I were wired like today's athlete.

Well, no one offered me $2.6 mil per year when I was in college, so to me it's a good offer. I wonder what he was offered from LSU. Looks like he committed to them when he was 16, and he's a 17 year old high school senior now. To me it's just crazy as there's NFL guys not making $2.6mil per year, and they have already shown what they can do. It just boggles my mind that someone is willing to pay this much money for an unproven commodity.

Continuing to call this "college" football is about like when a band keeps on going with all new members for years and years after all the original members who created the music have passed away, but retain the original band name because there's still money to be made using the name.

THIS is one of the facets of current CFB discussed during our annual Thanksgiving meal-gathering at work today. The subject was the fact that among us we pretty much all think there will never be another dynasty run like Bama has enjoyed over the last 15 years or so due to all the money being thrown around, open transfer possibilities and the inherent decline of school/program loyalty. It's a sad day indeed for old school college football fans such as myself.

EDIT: Yeah, I know we are not only talking about a 17-YO thinking, but the parents as well. $3M>$2.6M 😑

That's a lot of money just to go 8-4 with the coordinator they hired as coach.
 
This is the reason my “fandom” for most of intercollegiate athletics has moved to “interested observer” and rapidly moving the “causal viewer” mode.
If I wanted this I could be an Atlanta Fail-cons fan, leading a life of desperation and cirrhosis of the liver.

When did the boosters start caring that much about gymnastics?

The only reason she's on the list at all is her absurdly high following. If anything it's the opposite of there being a glass ceiling, she's the only representative from a sport that fans care very little about. 1 million people watch the NCAA gymnastics final, less than every Alabama game ever pretty much and Milroe is still behind her.
 
I looked her up on Wikipedia and she doesn’t seem to be that great of a gymnast. I get she’s hawt, but there are plenty of hawt gymnasts who actually win championships. So why is she getting the big bucks?

I was offered $2.6mm/year back in 1989 when I chose to take my (not terrible academic) talents to T-Town. I turned it down and said I would rather pay tuition like all the regular people because I was so full of Bama.

Social Media monetization. She knows how to work it. She has 13mm+ followers and probably can get $50K+ every time she makes a promoted post.
