The 100 meter dash is over in 10 or 12 seconds. The typical NASCAR race last 3-4 hours. That is 3 to 4 hours of cars turning left and if there is rain or a crash it can last 5 hours.

There is also only one 100 meter dash every four years that most people watch.

Still doesn't explain 250k people showing up to watch Indy cars run on the same track.

NASCAR was a Southern/country/redneck sport. Because of the retirement or death of drivers that the fans could relate to, NASCAR needed Dale Jr. to be GREAT....and he wasn't. The cars are all alike, it's hard to build loyalty and fandom when drivers/cars/sponsors swap all the time, the drivers are all alike (except for Bush, who is just a tool), it got too expensive, etc. It's more like death by a thousand paper cuts instead of one event.

I find it very odd one wouldn't go to a NASCAR race if they couldn't wave a Confederate flag.

Not odd at all. Part of the fun is watching the women wearing Confederate flag bikini tops. The other part is watching them taking them off and waving them.
