I am saying that Alabama's defense would be great with 2 returning ILBs, less than great with only one (HTT) and pretty bad with none. That is because this defense requires more of the ILB position than any other, and even when they play great the middle of the defense is still its weakness. So, if only HTT returns you have problems. If he gets hurt, it could get really bad.

I get that you see this as black or white, but when has an ILB in this system played like he needed to play in his first year as a starter?

That said, you are right that I am too worried about the defense overall. With all of the other returning stars, you will probably have a top 5 defense anyway.

7 guys on the 2022 will be in their 3rd year as a starter (when counting To'oto'os time at Tennessee):

Henry To’oto’o LB Sr
Will Anderson LB Jr
Demarcco Hellams S Sr
Jordan Battle S Sr
Brian Branch NB Jr
DJ Dale DT Sr
Byron Young DE Sr

That is the most 3rd year starters on a Bama defense together at one time that I could find. This is not including Christian Harris and LaBryan Ray who would be added to this if they returned. As well as not including a guy like Eli Ricks who has extensive starter experience at LSU, Eboigbe who has several years under his belt with multiple starts, and guys like Koolaid, Jackson, and Dallas Turner who got multiple starts this season.

Lastly, Bama returns their top 4 leading tacklers and 5 of top 6. This has not happened since leading into the 2011 season. This is a defense that has stability at DC with Golding back and there is reason to be excited.
