New coach search...

If BB offered north of $4 million, how did he handle it poorly?

By persisting after him after getting strong vibes that he wasn't coming. When Texas dropped off of Marshall and went after smart that should've been the clue that this was a cash grab opportunity and we should seriously look elsewhere as well. I don't think we would've got smart, but I think Barnes might of been an option. Before you say mal made saban say no to him before quoting his pursuit of him face to face, take into account we are the 1 program in football historically and saban was not happy in the nfl. Whereas Marshall is very happy where he is at waiting for a top school to come a calling, and alabama isn't one of them . I understand what battle was trying, but it seemed from the start like a lost cause at getting him out of there .

But everyone has opinions and different emotions about it .

At some point, GM will pay a price for this flirtation with us and the way he dragged it out. I'm convinced that He used us to extract a huge raise out of wsu with no intention of ever leaving Wichita. Actions have consequences.

Well shucks....
Let's move on to the next guy....one who is hungry to make a name for himself...and wants the job. Let's not overpay.

Putting out a release about not getting who you want as a coach seems like a terrible idea.

I hope I'm not alone in saying that BB has, so far, done a poor job with the basketball program. He fired Grant a year too late and has bungled the search for his replacement. Now Bama will end up hiring somebody that the majority of Bama fans won't recognize or care about. The program will likely drop further into mediocrity.

I wonder... if Grant had been fired in 2014 (which is what should have happened) who would Bama have gotten?

Like taking the Indiana job next season? Those fans would be a pretty big punishment.

I still don't understand why we didn't pursue Smart when it was clear Marshall wasn't serious about coming.

We offered him double his current salary and full control of the program. The fact that he didn't sign on the dotted line that same day or at least agree in principle should have raised some red flags.

We let this go on far too long and now will be forced to settle.

You're reaching...

He'll make tens of millions of dollars and live the rest of his life in comfort. I doubt he pays any sort of "price" by the college basketball karma gods.

I think it is reasonable to say we would probably outbid auburn for pearl if we interested. But who knows.
I personally think battle handled it poorly, but I by no means am calling for his head like some. I think he needs to look at some lesser knowns.

I said this earlier. IMO we would have gotten Pearl and our program would have the spark it needs to get back on track. Keeping CAG was really the worst possible outcome for us.

Then when is CNS's time to pay the piper cuz he does the same thing every two years. It's called smart business on CGM's part for giving him the two things he wanted: a raise and the ability to remain where he is happy. I know this news stinks but lets not go around and put curses on people because they played bb because they saw desperation and opportunity when he got off the plane.

Bruce Pearl would never have been allowed to step onto Bama's basketball facility as a potential hire.

I'm not calling for BB's head either. Even if he hires a nobody assisstant from North Louisiana Women's College. You gotta wait to see how the hire works out. But I will say Battle has done a poor job with the program thus far. Let's summarize:

Last March - Anthony Grant is retained despite having the worst season for Alabama since the 1960s.
This March - Anthony Grant is fired after once again missing out on the NCAA tournament, losing winnable games, putting a terribly unappealing product on the court and generally not being good.
Last week - It is clear that Gregg Marshall in Alabama's primary (only?) target and that Bama will spend big bucks to get him
This week - Bill Battle goes to Wichita and talks to Marshall for several hours.
Today - Gregg Marshall turns down Alabama and Bill Battle publishes a response which makes sure whoever Bama gets knows dang sure they're sloppy seconds.

I'm not calling for his head. It's too late for that. However, I don't think he ever should have been hired in the first place. Why did we feel the need to hire a transition guy? Up until recently, he's been acting as if he's just a really long-term interim AD. That's not even mentioning that he doesn't seem to be qualified. I guess we'll find out when we see his plan.

From Paul Suellentrop, Wichita Eagle sports writer...

@PaulSuellentrop Wild night. Left Eck Stadium around 9:30 thinking momentum was moving Alabama's way. That changed quickly. Quite a day for the #shockers.

After talking to Alabama people, I think whoever gets that job owes Bruce Pearl a cut. His hiring at Auburn is pushing Alabama. Things might

@PaulSuellentrop be different with their search if Auburn hadn't hired such a big personality. Howland at Mississippi State, Barnes at Tennessee also factors

@PaulSuellentrop People are telling me Marshall was debating a tough choice all day. Had to be exhausting for him. WSU made it worth his while and home-field

@PaulSuellentrop advantage took care of the rest. WSU's knocked off a bunch of top programs in the NCAA Tournament. Also defended Marshall against an

@PaulSuellentrop equally impressive list of schools in recent years.

@PaulSuellentrop Alabama threw every bit of its SEC might around, even involving its development staff and Nick Saban's agent, Jimmy Sexton, had a role, from

@PaulSuellentrop what I'm told. Repelling those boarders is quite impressive.

I concur.

If we can't get the head coach we want then go after an assistant under Coach K. at Duke or the Hurley guy who played for him.
