This guy was once in a standoff situation with a pistol and a fully-functioning machine gun. And he chooses for a sniper rifle an AK-47??

From what I understand it wouldn’t have been a long shot if he got a chance. An AK with a decent scope zeroed properly would be plenty accurate at a man sized target within a 150 to 200 yards.

The AK is versatile , but probably just using what he had.
You're probably right. Its main versatility is that it can be dragged through mud and still function at relatively close range. On TV earlier, they were talking about a 300-500 yd shot. At those ranges, with any scope on earth, the AK ain't accurate...

That distance, and on a golf course, I’m not sure he could’ve got him with a rifle.

Definitely unhinged.

An interesting question is how close would he have gotten if the SS hadn’t spotted him? I have no idea and can’t find anything. Was that as close as trump would have gotten to his position or would the path through the course have brought him closer?

Another question is leaving your rifle barrel sticking through the fence...

FOR A SNIPPER RIFLE:
AK-47 would never be my weapon of choice. It might be my choice in Jungle terrain/close qtrs.
For sniper rifles I would prefer a M-14/.308 with a quality scope.
BUT
If an AK is all you have at hand when you go nuts... ;)

No proficient or even serious would be sniper would. A lower priced hunting rifle with a half way decent optic would have been a more “appropriate “ choice. On occasion I have an opportunity to shoot with some of the guys from the sniper section that are with the Ranger unit stationed here in Savannah at Hunter Army Airfield. I’ve kidded them that with their equipment there’s really no excuse to miss. They just smile and wink.

Another question is how you acquire an AK-47 when you have a felony conviction for possessing a machine gun without license (and having it taken away from you after a 3 hour standoff with LEO). Further, questions abound - how did he know so much about Trump habits, living in either NC or HI? Access at that particular spot? The reporting so far is spotty. The gunfire by the advance SS patrol seems to be reported to be 300-500 yards. If that be accurate, and Trump were just then making the turn from his hole #5 to #6, then, from looking at the aerial view on TV, it appears he would have come much closer to Routh on the 5th green and 6th tee box, perhaps 100-150 yards. His AK would be adequately accurate at those ranges. CNN had a former SS counter-sniper on and he said that they used various Army sniper rifles and considered their max accurate range to be 200 yds. About the choice of an AK for a sniper rifle, he just snorted. There is much yet to come out. For one thing, I don't see how the daughter is not involved in some way...

That was going to be my only comment.
Anyone who does any distance shooting know that beyond 300 meters, you have to hyper-elevate the muzzle so much that it obscures your target.
An AK is great at 25-100M in a jungle (which was why it was so successful in Vietnam), but for longer range, you need a higher muzzle velocity and better construction. Amateur mistake this guy made.
