I am not a coach nor do I have any coaching experience. However, I’ve watched Ty play enough to develop an opinion - and I think you are correct, the coaches don’t trust him. He tries for the hero play far too often. He’s reckless with the ball. He throws a pretty spiral and is a really good athlete, but he’s not appreciably better than Milroe. I know a lot of folks on this board will disagree with this and it’s just my opinion, but you have two consecutive staffs now who didn’t think he was the answer. Of the guys we currently have on the roster, Lonergan looks like the best fit to run what DeBoer ran at Washington but he’s so green.

I personally think in the offseason Milroe declares for the draft and Simpson portals out. We end up with a three-way competition next season between Lonergan, Mack and Russell. All three of those guys are better suited for the DeBoer offense than Jalen or Ty, but they are just green. I don’t fault DeBoer for playing Milroe this season. He is a team leader and a veteran, and it’s DeBoer’s first season in the SEC. As maligned as Milroe has been, I think it was the right call. This was never a playoff team.

It’s kind of crazy that people are saying this about Ty when it’s literally just describing Milroe…

We have seen Milroe cannot evade pressure. We have seen Ty can. He had a free rusher come right at him earlier this year, and he just effortlessly slid away and delivered the ball. That simply doesn’t happen with Milroe.

I keep coming back to the question of why the coaches are not forcing Milroe to hand off more and intentionally develop the running backs as a bigger part of the offense. I know Milroe is part of the issue, but I'm not sure how much of a choice he's being given in terms of the type of offense Alabama is running. This is probably because I'm not sure that the coaches know how to establish a strong running game.

I decided to look up the rushing offenses under Grubb, DeBoer and Sheridan.
Let's start with Sheridan:
2020 Indiana 113th in rushing
2021 Indiana 114th in rushing

Grubb
2019 Fresno St. 58th rushing
2020 Fresno St. 105th rushing
2021 Fresno St. 90th rushing
2022 Washington 81st rushing
2023 Washington 102 rushing
*2023 Seahawks 28th rushing

DeBoer
2014 Eastern Michigan 108th rushing
2015 Eastern Michigan 79th rushing
2016 Eastern Michigan 86th rushing
2017 Fresno St. 75th rushing
2018 Fresno St. 87th rushing
2019 Indiana 76th rushing

We can make some excuses for them, but there were some good running backs at some of those places. For instance at Fresno St. they had Jordan Mims who ran for almost 1,400 yards and 18 TDs after DeBoer left and is now playing for the Saints.

The allure of DeBoer is supposed to be the offensive genius, but there clearly is no real ability (or desire) to establish strong running games. The tendency is to put the game into the hands of the quarterback.

I feel like we would have seen way more adjustments with Grubb though. Sheridan has never called plays before, to my knowledge. Milroe doesn’t do a ton of things well, but what he does well, he does VERY well. Grubb might have been able to tap into that more than Sheridan.
 
I get the frustration, but my gosh the despondency on this thread and this board in general……

Last night was not the worst loss in program history, or even in the last 25-30 years. Yes, it cost us a playoff shot and that stinks, but IMO this was never a playoff team. I had this team at 9-3 in the preseason and we are on track to hit it. Transition year, lots of portal attrition, new offensive and defensive schemes, and a really tough schedule.

I think the game planning and some of the playcalling was off last night, but I didn’t see any “quit” in the team. We had some atrocious calls go against us. OU captured lightning in a bottle last night. Everything that could have conceivably gone wrong went wrong. It’s been that kind of year. Lots of inexplicable losses across college football. There’s a whole lot more parity due to NIL and the transfer portal. IMO this loss pales in comparison to say ULM in 2007.

If they can regroup, beat AU and end the year 9-3 I will personally consider this season a successful one. I’ve seen too many first-year coaches run good programs into the ditch and IMO this is not that.

It all comes down to formations and philosophy. We don’t do many called handoffs anymore. It’s mostly zone reads, and it’s clear Milroe is going to keep it more often than not. We should have taken the decision out of his hands.

How can this even be a conclusion to come to when he's barely had any playing time where he's been allowed to throw the ball.

He's probably thrown an equal amount of Short, Mid Range, and Deep passes in an extremely small sample and never with any group but 2nd and 3rd string.

Other than the pretty spiral part you are describing Milroe and not Ty.

Milroe is one of the most reckless QB's I have ever seen.

He's fumbled the ball a LOT and will throw INT's right to the other team like he can't even see the defender.

Tbh No One has seen enough of Ty to make a definitive judgement. The kid has not been given one single fair shot at playing with the 1st string.

Sorry, but this is just not true. That 2007 team was a program coming off of probation and at least 8yrs of mediocre football. No one expected it to win anything. This team won the SECC and played for a NC last year. Even considering transfers, this team is vastly better than 2007. 2007 had excuses. This one does not.

It’s not “like he can’t see the defender”. It is literally BECAUSE he cannot see the defender.
