The entire 2023 season I honestly thought Washington was a bad team. I watched them play every game and they were frequently losing to unranked teams including Arizona until the final minutes. They frequently looked just bad, then Penix would pull some stunt. I was seriously surprised they beat Texas and played for the NC without embarrassing themselves.

I thought maybe my assessment was wrong, but I’m starting the worry that I was actually right.
I've been overly harsh on the DeBoer hire at times, it hasn't been all bad, there have been highs as well (Georgia, LSU, and Missouri last year for example) but this staff is obviously in a rut and has some serious stuff to work through. All that time to prepare for Michigan and FSU and this was the result? Not worthy of their salary, but he'll have the season to either total the Ferrari has was given to drive or to get it back on the road.

As far as your observation, my unease came from following Washington closely as well. Alabama needed help to get into the playoff, Washington played late a lot so I caught a lot of their games and it was unimpressive. Penix I was familiar with back from his time at Indiana (when he almost beat Ohio State basically by himself) so I felt like DeBoer was more of an unknown than some thought. I knew Penix was great, I'm not sure about DeBoer, but that I was overjoyed at the prospect of playing Washington in the playoffs and felt like they'd have been a virtual free pass because the team as a whole was generally unimpressive, unreliable defense and a team that totally relied on the QB to bail them out.

As I said before though, DeBoer does pull that rabbit out of a hat now and then though.

Well guys and gals if coach DeBoer flops out and gets canned who does Bama go after?
This staff is so expensive I'm not sure how easy it would even be to accomplish this no matter how bad the season goes, but I imagine the list would include Lanning, Dabo and Kiffin, all of whom sound more appealing at the moment.

We were at the Reliaqest Bowl end of last season on the Al 45 yard line behind our bench in the midst of a lot of Michigan fans and watched a pitiful Bama performance. Today was worse. I don’t see the intensity in this team.

never thought I’d say this but I think Kiffen may be better.

yup

talent is not the issue with this team and it wasn’t last year either
I know the HS ratings indicate we have incredible talent. But is it really?. In past years under Saban we had 3 starting nfl backs at a time. At least 2 or 3 or more starting NFL receivers. Same with most of the position groups. This is not the case the past 2-3 yrs..

So of course we have high level college talent, but not any truly elite defenders or unstoppable offensive players.

That’s not an excuse for our coaches, there is good enough talent for us to be at least competitive every week.

Key word… “supposedly”. You’re expecting us to not lose a beat in our running defense when we lose our All-American candidate there. As I mentioned before, how would YOU have game planned for this game given the number of new FSU coaches and players? The best you can hope for is to adjust after the game starts… and we did better after halftime because of that reason. We were on the verge of possibly tying the game if our DL doesn’t make a bond-headed move to drop a wrestling elbow on the downed FSU QB.
People seem to forget this. Had them stopped dead to rights until this.

this team needs to take the step to intensity and desire to win.

I keep seeing “competitive” and “prepared mentioned by guys, but tell me how YOU would have game-planned for FSU today. I get there’s “last year”… but the circumstances CKD faced then are different in 25. He’s not handcuffed any longer.

I’m not saying we don’t have issues, but no coach in America could have come in with a great game plan today unless he totally lucked out.

Time will obviously tell, but I think FSU will prove to be a much better team than OU of last year. Also, another similarity is that we had an injury to a key run stopper in both games. Depth… it can’t be emphasized enough.
I'm wondering more about "How did we *play* differently than we did in that game (and maybe the Mich game, too)?

When that memory is in our minds of lazy-looking tackling and horribly-timed penalties, it's hard when THOSE things aren't significantly better. And from my perspective, other than Ty (and a few others) appearing to stay confident/fight, I can't think of much we actually *did* that was better than that effort back in Nov

With the current state of CFB I’m not really sure it matters. CFB is going to look like the European soccer clubs soon where the few wealthy teams always win (hint Alabama isn’t one of the wealthy teams in the NIL era)
Truth… especially that info in the parentheses. Might be a tough pill to swallow.

To put a finer point on it:

Bama was - 23.5 pt at Vandy
Bama -13.5 pt at Oklahoma
Bama was -16.5 against Michigan (Backups)
Bama was -14.5 point at FSU

This guy ain’t it.
I hate to say it because I really like CKD. I think he is a quality guy.

That said, fourteen games into his tenure at. Alabama is a large enough sample size for me to see the writing on the wall. He’ll get the rest of this year and maybe 2026 simply because of his buyout. But now is “nut cutting’” for him.

As soon as that plane lands in Tuscaloosa, I’m sending the players to bed but let them know “come Monday I’m looking for football players. Buckle up your chin straps and pull up your jock straps because it might get ugly”. Then we are having a coaching:/staff meeting tonight. And it doesn’t matter if we are there until 5 am, we are going over everything single play. And Womack needs to be coaching for his job the next few weeks.

I said to a friend back in the summer that 8-4 or 7-5 or worse and miss the playoffs, he’s “coaching for his job” in 2026. Well, if this thing gets ugly in 2025 don’t know how Byrne can roll the dice with CKD in 2026, huge buyout or not.

Gameplan should have been for Gus and his tendancies, someone even posted that his Auburn friend pretty much called all the plays...and then bring the intensity and react with speed to what they did.....we did neither, were passive and allowed them to dictate play....that's definitely on the coaches

rdhsc (rinky dink high school coach) is not an unknown commodity. There’s plenty of film on him.

Play your assignments, don’t chase the fakes, and look out for the wheel route.

The first half they looked lost

What little passion I had for college football was pretty much extinguished today.

I tried, but I just am not feeling it. I've been posting quite a lot about this over the last couple of years - the way the game has changed (x-fer portal, pay for play, etc) has basically ruined the sport for me. I had hoped watching the game today would get me fired up, but in reality, I'm not even upset Bama lost. I feel no connection to this team, and they feel completely disconnected from the school I attended.

C'est la vie...
You couldn't express my feelings any better. I turned it off before halftime and have no interest in watching any other games. My dad has moved in with us since my mom passed so I know the game will be on but I don't want to watch it anymore for the very reasons you mentioned. The team is disappointing and the whole sport is a train wreck from my point of view.

Have to have more then 3 down linemen or people will keep running at will against us. Especially the qb. They are in 2 tightend set and we have 3 guys with hand down. 7 versus 3 or even with backers your still out man. Womack refuses to get out of the 3-3-5. It's not a good scheme to stop run if rb blocks and qb runs you got 8 guys blocking and we have 5dbs covering 2 wide receivers.

If Womack doesn't get out of base to stop run everybody will run for 250 yards.
I think our DL depth is poor. Without Keenan FSU pushed our front 7 around at will. Our first TFL was in the 4th quarter…..

New drinking game: You have to take a shot every time Proctor gets beat on a passing down.
I told my dad during the game when he got beat a couple of times and the announcers were talking about how impressive it was to beat him that it wasn't impressive to me.
