Bama Game Thread: Official PostGame Thread - Bama vs. UGA...

"Kalen DeBoer said LT Overton not being part of the punt unit led to a replacement player not making a check that led to a punt block."

I wouldn't have said this into a live mic.
TO ME, this kind of screams, "My special teams coordinator didn't properly prepare the replacement".
Yeah normally so, but CKD is trying to lobby now for a playoff spot so he's going to say that injuries played a key role in the loss and that if we're healthy we're one of the 12 best teams in the country.

This is the 5th ot 6th game in a row they looked bad. Offense collapsed mid season and is progressively worse each week. It’s certainly about more than injuries, it’s about being soft. ND or Miami would thump us at the level we are playing at.
Georgia has steadily improved and we have regressed. That’s coaching and lack of mental toughness.
This 100%. Where has the mental toughness and dominate your opponent mindset gone. Soft as charmin. This isn't Bama football.

And he's not wrong. Bama has injuries (some of which date back to week six) that have 100% affected the ability to make plays. And at least one of them has been kept very quiet by the staff because of the player affected.

It is what it is and while DeBoer has forgotten more about coaching CFB than I'll ever know I believe I would have done a few things differently - but regarding injuries he's not wrong.

Moving forward--

Whether we get in the playoff or go to a bowl game, we need to start looking towards the future. Focus practices on the players coming back next year (doesn't look like Proctor really wants to be out there anyway). Coach Stallings did this his first year; we got pantsed in the bowl game, but things went pretty good from there.

Drop some serious NIL coin on an OL.

Drop some serious coin on a new OL coach.

CKD needs to have a LONG talk with Grubb about his approach to playcalling. Send him to talk to Sark, I don't know.

I felt like outside the top 5 you really didnt have a claim to get in. CFB aint like NCAAM where you can have cinderella teams make deep runs in the tournament. The raw talent is so top heavy in CFB its just an insurmountable hill to climb. Which is to say, a 12 team playoff is too many.

Then again Ohio state won it all as a 8th seed so what do i know?
The point is a team can get hot and win the "NC" when they never deserved to play for it in the first place. That's the problem with the CFP - it reduces the value of the regular season.

Who cares? Would we rather have been a team protecting the scoreboard so we could lose in the playoffs?

IMO punting would have been a loser move
That’s absolutely false. If we punt it out of there, Kirby is not going to do anything stupid and put the ball in jeopardy. Get a 3 and out a start again. Cole should’ve put his cleats on the 10 and if it’s over his head, let it go. Two horrible special teams plays tonight. Punt block, inexcusable.

Doing that to the defense wasn't fair either. Alabama ended up having a drive later with time on the clock. There's a big difference between going for it with a lot to gain and going for it with a lot to lose. That just gifted 7 points to the other team, it dramatically lowered Alabama's chances of winning.

While there were dubious play calls, how many times did OL and RBs whiff on blocks, how many times did Ty not see open receivers, and how many times did WRs drop balls in their hands or right on their numbers? I think the problem is Jimmys and Joes even more than Xs and Os.

And really, if Ty had made the correct throw to the RB in the flat, or even taken off himself to get the two yards, no one would be questioning it. Instead, he chose a low percentage throw that he may well have made in the first half of the season, but hasn't made in some time and the ball went to UGA.

Throwing for a two yard play is bad enough, but making the harder throw (when you've missed much easier throws all night) is, well, it's how you end up gifting UGA seven more points.

I do believe, a couple of games back, Ty got hurt when his head slammed to the ground. He hasn't been the same since. He was pressured all night which did not help any, but without a running game, you can't keep opposing teams honest. Something is seriously wrong when we can't run for a first down on a 3rd and one or two.
Started vs Mizzou...

I think the big question that still remains is the same question that was there when CKD was hired and that is "Can a pass-happy offensive philosophy from the West Coast work in the SEC?" There's no question that SEC defenses are much better than PAC-12 defenses were as Venables and Kirby/Schumann have shown.
