Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

In this situation it doesn't matter how much you knew, how much you saw, or who you are. If you knew and were not part of the solution, you were part of the problem.
The only way for this to go on beyond the incidents that took place in the 1990's, before Sandusky was asked to retire, was with a cover up that allowed him to hang around the university and conduct his camps and Second Mile group.
Much of the damage was preventable.

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for numerous sexual assaults of minors

I read somewhere the McQueary couldn't be fired due to some interpretation of the whistle blower rules. Not sure I buy that.

The worst guy is Sandusky, no question. I hate seeing people say, "such and such is just as bad - they covered it up!" No, they're not just as bad. Not even close. But after Sandusky McQueary is the worst. Then the janitors. Then McQueary's dad for not telling his son to run back in there and beat Sandusky to within an inch of his life. Joe Paterno is, of all those culpable, the least responsible. Not to say he isn't pretty responsible, but in terms of culpability he's way down on the list.

The problem is that people read the indictment and then associate it with Paterno when it seems he really didn't know how bad it was.

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for 40 counts of sexual assaults of mi

For Sandusky, suicide would be a result of guilt for doing something horribly wrong. I don't think this animal thinks he did anything wrong. A line from Shawshank Redemption comes to mind about "being human and they don't qualify." Suicide is much more likely for the victims and those covering up these atrocities.

It seems that may have already happened with the County DA missing and presumed dead.

http://www.nytimes.com/2011/11/09/s...-sandusky-wrapped-in-2005-gricar-mystery.html
One of the questions surrounding the sex-abuse case against Jerry Sandusky is why a former district attorney chose not to prosecute the then-Penn State assistant coach in 1998 after reports surfaced that he had inappropriate interactions with a boy.

The answer is unknowable because of an unsolved mystery: What happened to Ray Gricar, the Centre County, Pa., district attorney?

Gricar went missing in April 2005. The murky circumstances surrounding his disappearance — an abandoned car, a laptop recovered months later in a river without a hard drive, his body was never found — have spawned Web sites, television programs and conspiracy theories. More than six years later, the police still receive tips and reports of sightings. The police in central Pennsylvania continue to investigate even though Gricar’s daughter, Lara, successfully petitioned in July to have her father declared legally dead so the family could find some closure and begin dividing his estate.

Unbelievable, if true.
For those wondering why JoePa didn't get more time and a more graceful exit...the BOT probably knew some more stuff was going to come out that would be further damning to him and PSU as a whole. JMO.

if this turns out to be true along with what I'm hearing locally regarding victim #2 this nation will be in complete shock and, hopefully, State Penn athletics shut down forever.

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for numerous sexual assaults of minors

Would the conference or NCAA do anything. Can they do anything?

Penn state's rep is ruined. Kind of sad. And I really hate to see this happen to end Joe pa's long and historic career.

I don't think the NCAA could really do anything. What happened at Penn St. did not violate one NCAA rule. Dealing with federal, state, and local crimes have always been up to the individual institutions...unless current or former players got some benefits (which clearly isn't the case here).

There's no doubt that Sandusky is the true monster, but JoPa and the others that swept his conduct under the rug are the ones that brought the university down. Had they done the right thing when they had the chance, that could have been avoided. Would it have been difficult? Sure. Would JoePa have survived it? Considering that he probably didn't have the full support of the trustees even then, maybe not. But everyone at the university could have held their heads high and have known that they did the right thing regardless of the consequences. There's never any shame in that.

First off you are entitled to your valid opinion but I strongly disagree.

Paterno is as a least as responsible as McQueary and the PSU Administration, but in my mind he is more responsible. It was Paterno's ('his and his alone') football program and his shower where the GA reported the heinous incident occurred. It was Paterno's ex-DC who reportedly was his good friend, that was reportedly raping (horsing around in a shower, whatever) a boy.

Paterno claims to be a leader of young men and he claims to have honor and intergrity. At this point his GA and ex-DC needed his strong leadership, which neither of them received. This disturbing situation is when Paterno should have stepped up with strong and decisive leadership and action. Making a phone call did not cut it. He should have immediately picked up the phone and told Sandusky he wanted an immediate face to face meeting. At that meeting he should have strongly confronted Sandusky and identified the child that Sandusky was seen 'horsing around with' in 'his' shower. Paterno as a responsible adult should have told the family of the child in question what he heard at the very least.

If I were in his situation I would have notified the police then, especially since there were situations of inappropriate behavor between Sandusky and children being reported and almost prosecuted before Sandusky retired from PSU. Apparently or should I say reportedly Paterno did not do anything other than pass the report along to an Adminitrator.

Paterno choked, walked away, turned a blind eye, etc on his responsibilty as a man, a head coach, a mentor, and a friend. That is not being a responsible citizen much less a man who was trusted to be completely in charge of PSU football. His inactions makes him responsible for the outcome of him being fired and his program being shamed.

Actually, Cecil hurt already outlined several bylaws where the NCAA could nail them - there are clauses about behavior and decency...

Soliciting athletic donations for child sex...they might figure out a way to shoehorn that one into a bylaw...

That is sick and it is crime and anyone involved with it should rot in jail for the rest of their life. But that doesn't have anything to do with the NCAA's mandate for punishment of a school.

Its major ethics violations, though. Look at Crimsonaduio's post above yours. The NCAA will get a say-so in this.

I stand corrected...although Hurt did say that he doubts the NCAA will pursue it due to the quick ouster of the president.

It would be unprecedented for the NCAA to pursue this if no other bylaws were broken. But I guess this is an unprecedented case.

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for numerous sexual assaults of minors

If (big if) it turns out that the university was active in covering this up, I think the NCAA is forced to act.

Have to wait and see what comes out next - it's been a pretty breathtaking 48 hours or so.

I do know the DOE is reportedly already investigating and I can almost guarantee SACS will be interested in what is found. If any of the 'cover up' allegation turn out to be true, this will practically destroy State Penn.

I am the only one for doesn't believe Joe Pa is an outstanding coach.

With all the goings on at Penn State and the firing of Joe Pa -- which I agree with by the way -- I began thinking about Joe Pa's legacy. I am not one for quoting statistics but you will get my drift...

Joe Pa won ONE national championship and I think 3 conference championships (some shared) in 46 years. Yes, I know Penn State was an independent until the 1980's. His winning average is .774 which is a good record (not great) and should be to keep his job. My conclusion is that he was a good (not great) coach who is blessed with good health. The only reason he ended up with the most wins in college history is longevity -- I mean it took him 46 years to do it.

Compare Joe Pa's record to the Bear who won SIX NCs while at Bama and numerous SEC championships. I believe there was a stretch of something like 8 straight SEC championships. By rights Coach Bryant should have been the first coach to win three NCs in a row (64, 65, & 66) except for shenanigans by the likes of Michigan and ND in 1966. Coach Bryant's winning percentage was .826 which IS great!

Joe Pa basically ignored a report by an eye witness to child rape/molestation. He did nothing or next to nothing. After he reported the matter to the AD and saw nothing was being done, it was his duty to report it to the police -- local or state but not Penn State police. I am disgusted by his inaction and who knows how many young boys was scarred irreparably by his inaction. Now, he is just a sad old man who needs to keep a low profile until he dies. He will judged at that time.

Re: Former Penn St. DC Jerry Sandusky arrested for numerous sexual assaults of minors

I certainly hope this report is not true or even close to being true. What is going on at State College? This sort of deviante sexual behavior sounds like something from anceint Rome were the upper class elites would have open relations with teenage boys.

http://www.businessinsider.com/jerry-sandusky-donors-2011-11
Sportswriter Mark Madden went on WEEI in Boston and reported a rumor that alleged child molester Jerry Sandusky would pimp out boys to rich donors.

"I hear a rumor that there will be a shocking development from the Second Miles Foundation ... That Jerry Sandusky and Second Mile were pimping out young boys to rich donors."

Madden claims it's being investigated by "two prominent columnists."

http://www.businessinsider.com/jerry-sandusky-column-2011-11
On April 3, the Beaver Country Times ran a column by Mark Madden headlined, "Sandusky A State Secret."

The column calls out the university for failing to stop Sandusky a decade ago, and warns that a impending grand jury report could cause a massive scandal.

It also asks many of the same questions we are asking this week.

SACS wouldn't have any reason to be involved in anything at Penn State, ca.

He's The Rolling Stones of coaches. His legacy was his longevity. Yeah he was good, but time made us think he was a legend.

Re: Penn State Officials Reportedly Planning Paterno's Exit

This situation is sick beyond belief. I am saddened that we have animals in society that abuse innocent children that often scars them for life.
As others have stated, if I had witnessed the incident in the showers, I would have confronted Sandusky immediately and put a stop to it. But, I do understand why or how he chose to avoid a conflict. He saw a powerful and highly respected man in the showers with the child and he was only a GA. He had a decision to make; he chose to aviod conflict and report it to Paterno.

Paterno, at this point, already knew about Sandusky's abuse of children. Years earlier, he had reported such to his AD; the decision was to avoid any involvement with law enforcement and to isolate the university from a potential scandal. So, their hands were bound when the GA came forward. Their decision years earlier to keep silent would be discovered if they went to the police with the GA's latest revelations. Instead, they suddenly decided to give the GA a promotion in exchange for his silence. Sad, sad.

I don't understand your logic. McQueary actually saw a 10 year being sexually assaulted. He witnessed it as it happened. He could have physically ended that incident. He knew exactly how bad it was. Nobody else knew what kind of monster Sandusky was other than the janitor. Paterno knew something bad happened, but we don't know exactly what he knew. At most he didn't know as much as McQueary did. McQueary told his higher up and then did nothing, same as Paterno. Sure, Paterno had more power. That doesn't matter. McQueary could have stopped the assault and that boy would have been saved from at least a little more trauma. Instead the boy saw McQueary turn and run and left him alone with Sandusky. That's unforgiveable. Even if Paterno knew that Sandusky was molesting children (which we're not sure he did) and did nothing (which isn't true - he told his superiors) he should have an easier time sleeping than McQueary.
