Ole Miss preview: Suddenly, this is Alabama's game of the year
by Jess Nicholas, TideFans.com Editor-in-Chief

Imagine for a moment that Alabama can't find a way to get up off the deck and beat Ole Miss this Saturday, which would give Alabama two losses before Sept. 23. In such a situation, Alabama would likely be knocked out of the national championship picture.

The last time that happened? Try 20 years ago.

You have to go back to the 2003 season to find an Alabama team that lost twice before the conclusion of the Sept. 23 weekend. Not even Nick Saban's first team, the 2007 edition of the Crimson Tide, suffered such a fate. Saban's first team was 3-1 on Sept. 23, coming off a 26-23 overtime loss to Georgia in Bryant-Denny Stadium, a Georgia team quarterbacked by Matthew Stafford.

We'll find out what this team is about as their poor play
has backed themselves into a corner. Key will be the offensive line.

I agree that this is a pivotal game, especially with the team's mentality. I'm glad it isn't a night game. I'm ready for the game to be played. Going to need lots of Tums. lol.

Would really not like Kiffin and Golding beating Bama, especially causing 2 losses so early. I don't think Ole Miss and Bama play each other next year at all. Not sure about the year after that. I hope the team is ready for tomorrow and that the crowd is loud!

Biggest positive: Milroe appears to do well against lesser defenses.
Biggest negative: Golding knows all Milroe's tendencies.

But overall I think Milroe will have a good game, I'm going with Jess on this one.

Of all the things I could be worried about with this game, this is not one of them. Golding was never able to take advantage of someone's tendencies and I doubt he starts now. Plus, we know his as well.

Hope you are right, but I think he is running his own defense now at Ole Miss... not Saban's. I'm sure he will have a few surprises.

The biggest thing we can hope for is Petey G's defense to do what it normally does which is get little to no pressure, be constantly out of position, and allow mobile QB's to run all over him.

i think Bama will win. They looked good the first game and against Texas they were ahead in the 4th quarter. l think last week was an the exception. We may not be a national championship team but we are better than what most people think after last week. A lot like the 1974 team that almost lost to FSU (with the longest losing streak in the nation) but won 8-7 on the last play on 39 yard FG. After that game the won the rest of the regular season before losing to ND in Orange bowl. This team has talent, just need to get them play together as a team.

I think the score will flip OM 30, Bama 23. I don't have a good feeling about this game...

We just came out of a dynasty that may never be matched again in college football. The decline started after the last National Championship. I’m very grateful for those amazing years. I say this not to be negative but to put things in perspective. I plan on being just as big a fan now as I was before the dynasty. I’m still hoping for a good year and this game might be the game we look back on as the game where it all turned around.

Did that include one Defensive lineman at times?
Before you criticize him for that, know that we still have that package in our defense this year and ran it a bunch against MTSU and Texas both. We even went small with it, using Jah-Marien Latham as the NT and the two OLBs as defensive ends.

When the down is obviously a passing down (3rd & 18, etc.) then it can make a lot of sense. These are just sub packages within the context of the greater system (3/4 over/under). Pete Carroll has been causing havoc with 2-4-5, 2-3-6, etc. packages for years.
