A Georgia freshman running back had a big day in his Bulldog debut Saturday against North Carolina.
Another looks close to being ready for his first game action this week.
Elijah Holyfield, who was bothered by an ankle injury in the preseason, should join freshman Brian Herrien in the tailback contingent against Nicholls State Saturday.
“We think Elijah was really close,” coach Kirby Smart said Monday . “Elijah could have played. It was a situation where he didn’t get many reps during the week. So we’re trying to get Elijah more reps during the week so that he can be able to play in the game.”
Herrien rushed for 59 yards and a touchdown on seven carries Saturday in a game where Nick Chubb rushed for 222 yards and two touchdowns.
Holyfield, a 5-foot-11, 215-pounder out of Woodward Academy, also created buzz this preseason with how he practiced.
Meanwhile, tailback Sony Michel’s situation hasn’t changed.
His status for Saturday is unclear. He warmed-up but didn’t play in Saturday’s win against North Carolina.
He sustained a broken forearm July 4 weekend in an ATV accident.
“Sony, again, it will be up to the doctors,” Smart said. “It’s a matter of when they clear him. When he gets cleared, he’ll be able to play.”
Smart was asked if he would like to see more help from Michel and Holyfield to lighten the load for Chubb, who had 32 carries Saturday.
“I think that will be game to game,” Smart said. “We’re going to go with the hot hand, whoever that is and what style of defense are they playing. Are they thick inside, are they thick outside, what do we gotta do to change it up and open them up. You just can’t become predictable.”
