OXFORD, Miss. | Good morning from Vaught-Hemingway Stadium for a rise and shine kickoff between Georgia and Ole Miss.
It’s the second straight road game. The Bulldogs returned to Athens from Missouri at about 3:30 a.m. Sunday, coach Kirby Smart said.
“It’s a tougher turnaround because you’re a little bit behind starting out on Monday, Tuesday and then you’re leaving again on Friday,” said Smart, whose team was slated to have a pregame meal around 7 a.m. ET today. “We’ve tried to be smart about the heat and how we practiced and still pushing guys because we’re going to have to play in the heat with an early kickoff.”
True enough.
The forecast calls for sunny skies and temperatures of 87 degrees at the 11 a.m. CT kickoff and rising to 91 by 12:45 p.m. CT, according to weather.com.
Just took a walk through The Grove and the Rebels 1-2 start didn’t seem to dampen the mood there. Georgia offensive lineman Sam Madden, not on the travel roster, was spotted heading that way with presumably family. There were plenty of Georgia fans taking in the scene and tailgating.
“While it is disappointing, life is disappointing at times,” Ole Miss coach Hugh Freeze said of his team’s start that includes losing leads of at least 21 points to Florida State and Alabama. “It’s what you make of it after those disappointments. We’re a good football team and I think our kids believe that. We have yet to play a complete game, which is disappointing, but I think we’ll handle it the right way.”
Coach Kirby Smart has talked up Ole Miss quarterback Chad Kelly all week.
“He’s got a hose for an arm,” Smart said. “He’s made some spectacular in his career and he continues to do that now.”
Ole Miss tight end Evan Ingram, who leads the SEC with 20 catches, said the Rebels’ weapons in the passing game will test Georgia.
“It’s going to be through the air,” Engram said. “We’re going to spread it out this week. We’re going to get some run game going but we’re really effective when we spread out all of our receivers and we get in space. The challenge for them is going to be just covering athletes and flying around for 60 minutes. It’s going to be a great game. They’re a good defense. They fly around really well. They’ve got a great coaching staff over there. They have a plan, but it’s going to be a great challenge for both of us.”
--Some pregame items:
--The referee today is Ken Williamson.
--Georgia's third-string quarterback and backup punter, Brice Ramsey, didn't make the trip. That makes walk-on Sam Vaughn the third-string quarterback behind Jaocb Eason and Greyson Lambert. Ramsey was seen with a wrap around a hand in practice Wednesday, according to Anthony Dasher of UGASports.com. Ramsey was working with the kicker and punters and not with the quarterback Tuesday and Wednesday during the media viewing period.
--Wide receiver Riley Ridley, coming off a broken bone in his thumb, is on the 70-man travel roster. He had been practicing with a small cast.
--Not on the travel roster: wide receivers Shakenneth Williams and Shaquery Wilson, defensive lineman Michael Barnett, special teamer Tim Hill (who was injured), cornerback Shattle Fenteng, offensive lineman Pat Allen and Sage Hardin. True freshman offensive lineman Ben Cleveland and outside linebacker Chauncey Manac.
