ATLANTA | Kirby Smart could be giving the green light for Georgia to be back in black jerseys.
“We’ll see,” the Bulldogs football coach said Monday evening before a private donor event at the Intercontinental Buckhead Hotel. “We’ll see where that goes. Nothing has been finalized yet."
What seems like an annual offseason source of speculation gained momentum earlier this month when recruits sent out photos on social media wearing black Bulldog jerseys.
“Lol yes people. UGA will have black Jerseys this fall,” cornerback K.J. Britt of Oxford, Ala., tweeted during his visit.
Smart said: “I think there’s a lot of energy around that and excitement but I’ve always been one that the energy and excitement should be focused on who you’re playing, not what you’re wearing.”
Then Georgia coach Mark Richt said in November of 2014 he backed the idea of wearing black jerseys once a season, preferably in November, but it didn’t happen again.
Georgia wore black jerseys for the first time in the modern era in a 45-20 win against Auburn in 2007 and again in a Sugar Bowl win that season against Hawaii, but hasn't worn them since a 41-30 torching by Alabama, a game the Bulldogs trailed 31-0 at halftime.
Smart was the Crimson Tide defensive coordinator for that game in Sanford Stadium.
