There’s another decision to make on Georgia’s starting quarterback this week, but whether Kirby Smart gives the nod to Greyson Lambert or Jacob Eason doesn’t have quite the same urgency.
“I don’t think it’s as pressing an issue as it was last time because both of them have played now,” the Bulldogs coach said Tuesday evening. “So it’s not as in the forefront.”
Still, Smart said after the second practice of the week preparing for Saturday's game against Nicholls State he would like to name a starter before the end of the week.
“I want to (name a starter) but it may not resolve itself,” Smart said. “When we feel comfortable about who’s going to go out there for the first play, we’ll name it. But we’re not that comfortable about that right now.”
Lambert, the fifth year-senior, started Georgia’s 33-24 win over North Carolina Saturday. He completed 5 of 8 passes for 54 yards. He took the first quarterback snap in one of the drills during the media viewing period Tuesday with Eason following.
Eason quarterbacked five series in the opener and went 8 of 12 for 131 yards and a touchdown.
The statistics don’t tell the whole story, Smart said.
“There’s so many more things that went into that game that didn’t work out right with Jacob out there,” he said. “You like to base things on how guys performed and how they played and I know to the public eye he made a couple of bigger throws. He had an opportunity to make a couple of bigger throws so that’s not the be-all and end-all. There’s a lot of functioning of the offense that’s got to improve for both of them and for the guys around them.”
That includes communication with the offensive line as well, Smart said, in making the right calls at the line of scrimmage and blocking the right players, “carrying the ball the right way. There’s a lot that’s got to improve and that goes for Jacob and Greyson as well.”
