Georgia coach Kirby Smart admitted he kept a close eye on Nick Chubb during his first couple of runs Saturday.
They came early in the Bulldogs’ first preseason scrimmage and marked the first time the star junior running back carried the ball in the closest thing to a game-type environment since his season-ending knee injury on Oct. 10 at Tennessee.
The scrimmage was closed to the media, but Smart said Chubb got seven or eight carries.
“I think the officials were more worried about it then we were because they were trying to blow the whistle quick and we didn’t want that,” Smart said. “He got tackled and did well with it. It was important for him to get over that psychologically but also the physical conditioning part or getting up and down off the ground.”
Smart had seen enough in nearly two weeks of practices that he had a good sense of what Chubb might bring to the scrimmage. Chubb tore three ligaments in his left knee on the first offensive play against Tennessee but his recovery from the gruesome injury has fueled hopes he would return to the form he had in rushing for 2,294 yards and 21 touchdowns in one and a half seasons.
“We’ve been through so many practices where he’s been carrying the ball that it wasn’t the center of attention, it wasn’t the focus,” Smart said. “He broke some tackles. He probably didn’t look as sudden as he has in the past, but a lot of these guys they’ve got camp legs. They’ve practiced a lot of days in a row.”
Sunday will mark the first off day after 13 straight days of practices.
Meanwhile, tailback Sony Michel went through pre-scrimmage work in a non-contact jersey without a cast on the left forearm that he broke on July 4 weekend.
“That was just knowing that he was not going to be a part of the scrimmage,” Smart said. “It wasn’t like the next step or anything like that.”
Smart described freshmen Elijah Holyfield and Brian Herrien as “real tough runners” in the scrimmage. They broke a lot of those tackles I’m talking about. Those guys ran with a lot of effort, a lot of toughness. Knock on wood, they didn’t put the ball on the ground.”
